Karlisms: Karl Isn’t Stressed Out

Imagine Fashion recently posted an interview with Karl Lagerfeld where he dishes on what he’s wearing, upcoming projects like illustrating more books, writing and illustrating a children’s book about Coco Chanel and creating movies.  He also discusses the pressures of being a designer and dispelling the notion that designers are overworked.  Here’s a short clip of the interview:

You can see the whole interview on The Peripatetic Fashionista.

chanel fall-winter 2011/2012 beauty

Last week I posted images of the beauty at the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 show and I found more images from behind the scenes – I especially seeing Peter Philips at work.  I love dark smokey eyes and the eye makeup in the couture show was smoldering!  You can achieve the look by using these products.

First Look: Karl Lagerfeld’s Pen

karl lagerfeld pen

A few days ago I posted about Karl Lagerfeld’s soon-to-launch S.T. Dupont pen and here’s a first look.  Not only does he love books but he’s also a “paper freak” and has so many pens he says: “I cannot count.”  This release appears to be the first of many as this partnership may be long term.  Alain Crevet, president of S.T. Dupont’s management board, stated about Karl Lagerfeld: “He has many ideas.” Indeed he does as can be seen from his six collections for Chanel, collections for Fendi, his eponymous line and his numerous collaborations.  I can’t wait to see a close up of this very, very expensive pen.

Anna Wintour Accepts Legion d’Honneur in Chanel Haute Couture

anna wintour accepts legion of honor in chanel haute couture

Anna Wintour accepted Legion d’Honneur – the highest award in France – in a midnight blue beaded Chanel Haute Couture suit fresh off the runway.  She looks very elegant and what better to wear than Chanel Haute Couture to accept such a prestigious award?

Stella Tennant in Chanel Haute Couture at The Love Ball

stella tenant at love ball in chanel haute couture
Last night Valentino hosted his Love Ball at Chateau de Wideville.  The White Fairy Tale Ball was held in honor for Natalia Vodianova to benefit her Naked Heart Foundation. Stella Tenant attended and wore white – per the theme – from the Chanel Spring/Summer 2011 Haute Couture collection.  She looked great but I’m still obsessing over the black pointy toe flats from the couture show – nothing can top them!

Chanel 2011/2012 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Makeup By Peter Philips

Chanel 2011/2012 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Makeup By Peter Philips
In the early stages of the Haute Couture Collection, a few key elements came up.  Karl mentioned the masculine/feminine silhouette, the decor (Place Vendôme), the fact that we were going to do a show at night and the flashlight shoes. That’s where the veil/burglar idea came from. The focus is on the eyes, but through a veil. Skin is pure with a hint of blush and the lips are velvet peach. On the nails we used Chanel’s classic “Le Vernis – Blue Satin”, a timeless night blue.

I wanted to create an eye that would read through a veil, that’s why I used “Illusion d’Ombre in Mirifique”, a pitch black with starlight sparkles. Eyes that see in the dark and nails the shade of night. And a soft touch of “Rouge Allure Velvet – La Furtive”, perfect for stealing kisses.

–Peter Philips on creating the Chanel Makeup Looks for the Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Show

The makeup used in the Haute Couture show – though behind a veil – made a statement.  The dark smokey eyes are lovely, especially as they play off of the darkness of the set and the black sparkle of the floors.  Even with the lace veils you could see there was some serious makeup going on under the lace.  I love that Philips used Blue Satin – one of my favorite nail colors, it’s perfect to evoke the midnight feel of the show.

Here are the products Peter Philips use to create the looks:

The Complexion
VITALUMIÈRE AQUA Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup SPF 15
POUDRE UNIVERSELLE LIBRE  Natural Finish Loose Powder
ECLAT LUMIÈRE Highlighting Face Pen

The Eyes
ILLUSION D’OMBRE Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Mirifique – Fall 2011 Collection
STYLO YEUX WATERPROOF Long Lasting Eyeliner in Ebène
RECOURBE CILS DE CHANEL Precision Eyelash Curler – August 2011

The Cheeks
JOUES CONTRASTE Powder Blush in Rose Ecrin – Fall 2011 Collection

The Lips
SOIN TENDRE LÈVRES Hydrating Lip Treatment
ROUGE ALLURE VELVET Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Furtive (Exclusive to Asia)

The Nails
LE VERNIS Nail Colour in Blue Satin – on the hands
LE VERNIS Nail Colour in Jade Rose – on the feet

Each day more and more images surface online of the Chanel ads styled by Carine Roitfeld featuring Freja Beha Erichsen and photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.  Here are the latest shots – some are very racy.  I especially love the one of the Boy Bag – let the bag and the legs do the talking!

Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Collection: Les Allures de Chanel

Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Collection: Les Allures de ChanelThe Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture collection, called Les Allures de Chanel, was an homage to Mademoiselle and her mysterious charm. The Grand Palais was recreated into Coco Vendôme, a dark recreation of Place Vendôme, the home of The Ritz where Coco Chanel lived. There was an eery Film Noir mood with the set cast in black with neon lights outlining the structure and windows. Sitting high atop the center column was a robotic version of Coco herself, replacing the statue of Napolean that you would find at Place Vendôme. Models walked around the square – some say the shape that inspired the Chanel N°5 bottle – amid lampposts as if taking a late night stroll.

For Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture collection it seems Karl Lagerfeld set out to answer one question: How many ways can I design a peplum? The answer is a collection that shows a vast array in many fabrics. The peplum was popular in the 1940s – the era of Film Noir‘s hey day.  Cascading, layered, tweed and beaded.  Any kind of peplum you could imagine was present.  My favorite was one worn by Stella Tenant (pictured above) with layered pieces of fabric that were all hand cut.  The peplum curves were echoed in rounded shoulders.

In contrast to the curves of the peplum drawing attention to the waist, we saw straight styles that eliminated the waist made popular in the 1920s, notably by Coco Chanel.  Many dresses in fact seemed directly inspired by collections designed by Gabrielle Chanel (stay tuned for an upcoming post with images!).  In addition to the straight dresses, another early Chanel reference was the boater hats that all of the models wore – a style that Chanel also wore and popularized.  Karl took us from the 1920s, to the 1940s and then to the 1950s when she returned to the world of fashion and gave us her infamous tweed suits.

Les Allures de Chanel has something for every Chanelphile to appreciate and admire.  I myself never tire of seeing all of the exquisite detail that goes into every item.  Even pieces that look simple are deceptively so.  That Karl can make something so intricate look simple is a testament to his genius.  I especially loved the lace over the eyes – something we’ve seen before in the Spring 2007 Chanel Haute Couture show – but something I don’t tire of.  From what I could see there was a seriously smokey eye underneath the lace veil – something that goes perfectly well with the Femme Fatale / Film Noir feel to the collection.  More to come soon on the set, inspiration and details of the collection.  For now, enjoy all of the images and videos…

Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Haute Couture First Look

Earlier today Karl Lagerfeld unveiled the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Haute Couture collection.  I’m gathering info and images but here’s a little taste of what’s to come.  Lagerfeld never fails when it comes to drama and respecting the heritage of the brand.  More images and a review coming soon!
