Karl Lagerfeld Draws Himself

karl lagerfeld orrefors colette window

Back in June I mentioned that Karl Lagerfeld designed glassware for Orrefors, and now the collection of glasses and vases are available for sale on the Colette website.  To celebrate the collaboration between Lagerfeld and Orrefors, Colette asked Karl Lagerfeld to decorate the window of the boutique.  The result is a pretty genius self-portrait of Karl Lagerfeld holding his designs for Orrefors – one of which he customized with Colette’s logo.  View the video below to see him draw himself…

Biographers Debate Coco Chanel’s Nazi Ties

I read Sleeping With the Enemy a few weeks ago but I didn’t have a chance to write my review before I left for New York for Fashion Week. I’ve waited on writing the review because my notes are in the book (which I left at home) but I will say that Hal Vaughan did not convince me that Coco Chanel was a Nazi spy. While I will wait on going into details on why I’m not convinced until I have my notes with me, I found a really interesting interview on BBC radio where Hal Vaughn and another Chanel biographer, Justine Picardie, debate Chanel’s involvement with the Nazi’s. Having read both books, I agree with Justine Picardie’s point of view. Have you read the books? What do you think?

You can hear the interview with Hal Vaughn and Justine Picardie on the BBC website.

karl lagerfeld manicure

  • Chin Chow sported a lovely manicure and when asked about it, all she could say was that it was for a shoot she did with Karl Lagerfeld – can’t wait to see!  I love this manicure – I may have to replicate it! (Style)
  • Word on the Hollywood streets is that Lea Michelle and Dianna Agron, both of Glee fame, are sourcing rare vintage couture from the Chanel archives for the Emmy Awards.  I hope this is true because I would love to see dresses from the archives – though I’d be afraid to wear it!  (E!)
  • Another rumor, this on the financial end, but word is because of the weakend dollar in Asia, some Chanel boutiques in Asia are “limiting new customers to one bag before they get into a deeper relationship.”  (Forbes)
  • Tory Burch debuted her first clothing collection at New York Fashion Week and Suzy Menkes called it “Coco Chanel Lite”.  (New York Times)
  • Elizabeth Taylors clothing and jewels are up for auction this December including a dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld back when he was designing “for the Tiziani label in Rome.”  (New York Times)

voodoo chanel

  • Chicks on Speed have created a “Voodoo Chanel” exhibit and one of the designers stated: “I actually wanted to offer them [Chanel] to do a youth line – that Voodoo Chanel becomes super hip, because we’re making Chanel cool by making Voodoo Chanel!”  REALLY?  YOU’re making Chanel cool? Ha!  (WWD)
  • mrluxlifey shows us what it’s like to open up a box with a Chanel bag for the very first time (mrluxlifey)

  • Chanel tops Alexa Chung’s list of fashion favorites, she stated:  ‘They’re just so frigging classy.”  Well said.  (Elle UK)

Pharrell Williams Customized His Boots With Double C’s

pharrell chanel boots

Pharrell Williams had the Twitterverse atwitter when he tweeted a photo of a pair of black Timberland boots with double C’s on them.  Everyone was speculating about a potential new collaboration but it appears it was simply some DIY magic.  He customized the boots himself – looks like he’s a Chanel fan – but he should just wear the real thing non?

Karl Lagerfeld’s Château Rauzan-Ségla 2009 Wine Label

Chateau Rauzan Segla Karl Lagerfeld Wine Label

Back in April, I mentioned that Karl Lagerfeld was designing a wine label for the 350th anniversary of Chanel-owned Château Rauzan-Ségla.  The label has recently surfaced and it’s a signature Karl Lagerfeld illustration of the Château.  It seems he took the Château’s label and gave it the Karl touch with his pastel smudges and watercolors.  I wonder how much this designer vintage will go for?

Karlisms: Karl Lagerfeld on Michelle Obama, The Royals and Dominique Strauss-Kahn

karl lagerfeld

Karl is never at a loss for words – here are some of his memorable recent quotes…

On Michelle Obama:

“I love Madame Obama, but not in terms of clothes…I like her face, the cleverness of her face. Her face is stronger than the clothes.”  (Washington Times)

On The Royal Wedding Outfits:

“But this was not a collection, this was the choices of this kind of woman for this kind of ceremony: the bad proportions, the ugly hats, the short skirts on fat legs.” (Grazia)

On Watching Television:

I like if I’m on TV; watching it is not my specialty. I prefer what I see in my mind-I get second-rate images delivered there for free. But I’m not too bad on TV. I commented on the English [royal] wedding for the [French] state channel. Normally they don’t have a huge audience, but with me doing it, we had nearly 50 percent and the others had only 30 and 20 percent. An event like that is fun to do because I can make jokes, and jokes of the lowest kind are not against my mentality. But I don’t want to do it all the time, hmm? (Grazia)

On Dominique Strauss-Kahn:

I love DSK. I love his wife. They are great people and when they came back to Paris I sent them flowers. But you know, for people in politics, it’s very embarrassing. On the left they had hoped he wouldn’t come back, because I think other people want his job. And on the other side…but even in America, Clinton survived his blow job. (Business Insider)

On Drugs:

I never smoke, I never take drugs, I’m never drunk, because I like only what I’m doing — work, reading, learning, sketching, taking photos. For the rest, my lack of passion or interest for this kind of thing makes it perhaps too easy for me to judge others. I’m surrounded by people who drink and take drugs. It doesn’t bother me at all, even when I know it’s bad for them. I’m not teaching them. (Fashionologie)

Fashion in the Streets: NYFW Edition Teaser

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” – Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel

La Chanelphile is the blog most dear to my heart because it’s still in its infancy and showing so much promise.  I’m so enamored with the brand that ideas for different columns keep spilling out of my head – case in point – my new column “Fashion in the Streets.”  Chanel knew that fashion was all around her and that many ideas that inspire how we look come from what’s happening in life and “in the street.”  So, I’ve decided to start documenting Chanel as I see it worn in the streets. What better place to start documenting than New York Fashion Week? There is no shortage of Chanel so my job was pretty easy.  I have a ton of photos to go through but here is small teaser of what is to come.  Enjoy – and stop drooling!  Oh, and many many thanks to the lovely ladies who let me photograph them!

Debbie Harry in Chanel?

Sorry for the lack of posts I’ve been running around NYC covering shows for Fashion Week.  Today, I stopped by the Marc by Marc Jacobs Blondie pop-up shop to get a glimpse of the living legend herself.  I was on the sidewalk when she arrived in her black SUV and when she came out I was able to get a few good shots.  I was happy to see that she was wearing a pink shirt with paint splatters and our favorite double C’s.  I don’t know what collection it’s from (or if it’s even authentic) but whatever Debbie Harry wears is ok in my book. :)

UPDATE 09.15.11@DefDumbAndBlonde let me know that the top is made by Scooter LaForge
