I Told You So!

A few weeks ago I posted a Dior video that showed a pinball machine game animation and I likened it to Chanel’s “Here Comes the Beauty Pack” video that brought Chanel cosmetics to robotic life. I know it was a bit of a stretch but for me Dior’s video was reminiscent of Chanel’s video – especially when looked at in the context of all the other copying that has been happening.

One of La Chanelphile’s readers, Alexandre Fons, brought this Dior video to my attention.  The video was uploaded about a month ago and depicts a Dior cosmetics animation in the form of Tetris, Pacman and Super Mario Brothers.  Sorry, but there’s no arguing your way around this one Dior – so unoriginal! Thank you Alexandre for bringing this to my attention!

Karl Lagerfeld Launching Signature Collection

Karl by Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld has ridden the wave of collaborations and is no refocusing his energy on himself – his own signature “masstige” (mass + prestige) collection that is. Karl – the name of the new collection – will be less Chanel and have more of a rock ‘n roll feel that we see in Karl Lagerfeld’s eponymous collection. Consisting of 100 pieces ranging from $95 to $450, Karl will debut exclusively online on Net-a-Porter.com and then roll out on KarlLagerfeld.com on February 28th.

“It’s my today’s taste and style and a reflection of how I think a great number of people would like to be dressed now,” is how the designer described the collection.

Future plans for Karl also include menswear, availability in 20 high-visibility retailers and pop-up shops in major cities around the world.

Natalie Massenet, founder and executive chairman of The Net-a-Porter Group, stated:

“It’s a very strong, well-edited collection with a great mix of street attitude and timeless chic. It also is an entire wardrobe that mixes and matches well with itself,” she said. “While it has great contemporary price points, it has enough edge to resonate with a sophisticated fashion consumer who is looking for great new items at any budget.”

Lagerfeld will also be launching Karl Lagerfeld Paris – a premium line with a price point ranging from $411 to $3,425. Karl Lagerfeld Paris will launch during Paris Couture Week.

Karl Lagerfeld Photographs Florence Welch in Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld Photographs Florence Welch in ChanelFlorence Welch has been one of Karl Lagerfeld’s muses for some time.  She performed at the Chanel Mademoiselle Dinner in Paris,  Karl styled her for Vogue Japan and she performed recently at the Chanel Spring 2012 ready-to-wear show.  In their latest collaboration, Karl Lagerfeld photographed Florence Welch in Chanel for the “Shake It Out” new limited edition vinyl single.  The photographs are stunning – I’ve never seen Florence Welch look lovelier. What do you think?

Karl Lagerfeld Halloween Costume

karl lagerfeld halloween costumeHalloween is just a few weeks away and it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing a reminder of the upcoming holiday.  While my days of dressing up are done, I still like to imagine what I would be for Halloween if I were celebrating.  One of my favorite costumes that comes to mind is Karl Lagerfeld.  Uncle Karl’s style is unique and instantly recognizable so it’s a perfect Halloween costume.  And, you can put it together with some stylish pieces that you may already have – or can incorporate into your existing wardrobe.  Here’s what you will need:

1.  A wig.  If you can’t find a white one, you can put your hair in a pony tail (or a darker wig) and cover your hair (or wig) with baby powder – just like they did back in the day;

2.  Leather (or faux leather) fingerless gloves;

3.  Black sunglasses;

4. Black Tie (or White) – the wider the better;

5. A brooch with a gemstone to use as a tie clip;

6.  A long chunky silver necklace to wear over your tie;

7.  A white high-collar shirt;

8.  Black jeans – a funky finish like wax coating gets you extra points;

And, if you’re going as chubby Karl from the 1980s then you can’t be without a….

9.  Fan!

Happy Halloween!

Harper’s Bazaar Russia is celebrating 15 years in print and to commemorate the occasion they are releasing 15 different covers designed by fashion designers including Jean Paul Gaultiee, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and of course, our favorite Karl Lagerfeld. For his cover, Uncle Karl sketched Russian model Natasha Poly in his signature pastel style. Hey Karl, my birthday is in November – may I have a sketch please? :)

Book Review: Coco Chanel by Linda Simon

coco chanel by linda simonThe only books I’m reading these days are Chanel biographies because there are at least five books that have come out this fall about Coco Chanel and I’m reviewing them all.    For forty years, writers have tackled the life of Coco Chanel and with the exception of Coco Chanel: The Legend and The Life and Sleeping With the Enemy – where the authors had access to intelligence that was never before available – you may wonder what more can be said on the subject of Coco Chanel’s life.  I was wondering the very same thing when I set out to read Coco Chanel by Linda Simon.

Coco Chanel by Linda Simon is a very quick read going through Chanel’s life from childhood all the way to Karl Lagerfeld picking up the reins.  While many of the aspects of Chanel’s life that are already documented in other biographies are glossed over, Simon distinguishes her biography of Chanel by the wealth of fashion research she has done.  Of all the biographies of Coco Chanel that I have read, Linda Simon’s relies most on fashion primary source materials such as fashion and women’s magazines and newspapers.  For the first time, I learned in detail about the wider context in which Coco Chanel’s fashions were viewed.  While I had read about most of what was in this biography, there were a few facts here and there that I learned from reading Coco Chanel.  If you want something very in depth on Coco Chanel this is probably not the read for you.  If you want to read a book that does a good job of summarizing Chanel’s life, rounded out with a good dose of fashion history then I would recommend this book.  You can purchase Coco Chanel by Linda Simon on Amazon.com.
