Cindy Sherman has new large-scale works on exhibit at Metro Pictures Gallery in NYC. The series of photographs is based on an insert she did for Pop Magazine that featured clothing from the Chanel archive. As she developed the images for exhibition she has since significantly altered the photos.
Each photo features Sherman wearing Chanel – ranging from pieces designed by Coco Chanel herself from the 1920s to contemporary pieces designed by Karl Lagerfeld. In each image she stares at the viewer amidst a background that in some cases is complimentary to the clothing, and in others is completely foreign. The background landscapes are photos that Sherman took on the island of Capri and on Iceland in 2010 during a volcano eruption. She manipulated the landscapes and gave them a painterly effect in Photoshop.
If you are in NYC you can see the Cindy Sherman exhibit at Metro Pictures Gallery now through June 9, 2012.
