Flash Back Friday: Aubazine Abbey

aubazine abbey

After her mother’s death when she was eleven, Coco Chanel’s father dropped she and her two sisters off at the orphanage at the abbey at Aubazine in Corrèze, France. Chanel spent six years at the orphanage where leading a simple life where the future designer learned to sew. Much of Coco Chanel’s design lexicon is rooted in her time at the orphanage at Aubazine. From the double-C perhaps inspired by the design on the glass windows, the patterns she saw in the stone floors, the monastic color palette of black and white and the importance Chanel placed on fragrance, much of what we love about Coco Chanel’s brand and designs harken back to her sad days at Aubazine.

aubazine abbey

Since Coco Chanel spent many formative years there I thought it would be great to highlight it in a Flash Back Friday post and I hope one day to visit Aubazine Abbey myself. For a more in-depth look at the influence of Aubazine on Coco Chanel read Justin Picardie’s Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life.

First Look: Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura

karl lagerfeld for shu uemura

I found a few images online of the the Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura collection so I thought I’d give you a sneak peek. The packaging is adorable and features Karl’s Mon Shu girl stamped all over it.

The collection features seventeen pieces including Shu Uemura favorites “UV Under Base Mousse, eyelash curlers (with a red pad instead of black) and the cleansing oil.” (StyleJunkee). There are some really fun products too like patterned fabric false eyelashes and mulit-colored false eyelashes. The three nail colors will be sold with nail stickers adorned with Mon Shu.

The line will be available in October but I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of this online before the release. What do you think of the collection? Is it worth the wait?

Chanel “Obsession” by Cyrille de Vignemont

chanel obsession by Cyrille de Vignemont

Still from Chanel "Obsession" by Cyrille de Vignemont

Cyrille de Vignemont created a video for Chanel featuring British model and Karl Lagerfeld muse Edie Campbell. The video plays on the duality that is Chanel – black/white, masculine/feminine – using paneled mirrors reminscent of the ones at 31 Rue Cambon. On his website de Vignemont stated “Conceived as a mirror piece, the film illustrates Coco Chanel’s famous sentence ‘Luxury is something beautiful inside and out’ and plays on the star model’s identities: girl or boy, eternal or modern, but always marked by CHANEL Obsession.”

The styling in this video is impeccable and the song is gets under your skin and stays there – in a good way.
Cyrille de Vignemont stated that Obsession is also available as an interactive iPad app but I haven’t been able to find anything on the App store yet. I’ll keep you posted! For now, enjoy the video and join me in obsessing over all the gorgeous Chanel…

Italian fashion writer and style visionary extraordinaire Anna Piaggi passed away yesterday at the age of 81. Piaggi wrote for Italian Vogue and she was ubiquitous in the front row of fashion shows with her eccentric look. Anna Piaggi was also Karl Lagerfeld’s muse and he is quoted as saying “Anna invents fashion. She automatically dresses herself as we will dress ourselves tomorrow.” (AFP)
