When I saw the models walking down the runway for the Chanel Métiers d’Art Paris-Édimbourg show, the first thought that came to mind was Mary Queen of Scots. When I learned that the presentation would take place at Linlithgow palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, I wanted to learn more about the tragic queen because I had a hunch that Karl Lagerfeld would be inspired by her. Looking at the red hair of many of the models and the upswept hair, it was hard not to see the similarities to the portraits of Mary Queen of Scots. The pale skin and the flushed cheeks evoked the cold weather of the Scottish Highlands and should be an easy look to replicate – especially in the fall and winter months. I also loved the winding braids that evoked Renaissance hairstyles.

The Chanel Métiers d’Art Paris-Édimbourg Prefall 2013 Collection was presented in the dark mist of Scotland in Linlithgow Palace. The collection was a study in Scottish Highland dress – traditional motifs like Tartan, Argyle and Fair Isle were worn with a sophistication that only Chanel could conjure. Layering was a key element of the collection with Lagerfeld piling on scarves, sweaters and coats all in a mix of plaid patterns and tweeds. Nods to traditional Highland Dress were also seen in the accessories such as flasks, belts, bonnets and sporran and in details that evoked kilts. Footwear included ghillie brogues, Dr. Martens-type boots and fur covered boots – all of the shoes and boots were flats.
There was also an element of Renaissance style in the collection that was seen in the white blouses with elaborate bow ties paired with plus fours (traditional golf pants) and bubble skirts reminiscent of men’s Renaissance dress. The final pieces in the collection were a nod to the royal dress of Mary Queen of Scots and models looked as if they walked out of the 16th century with details like funnel sleeves, lace collars and jabots.
The Métiers d’Art collections are my favorite because they are a celebration of the ateliers that Chanel has acquired through Paraffection to keep these skills and traditions alive. The ateliers include the milliner Maison Michel, the shoemaker Massaro, the costume jeweler Desrues, the embroiderer Maison Lesage, the feather dresser Lemarié, the embroiderer Atelier Montex, the goldsmith Goossens and the newly acquired glovemaker Causse.
