Chanel Ready-to-Wear Autumn-Winter 2013/2014 Collection

2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Chanel’s first boutique in Deauville and to mark the occasion, Karl Lagerfeld illuminated a giant rotating globe to show the global expansion that Chanel has made in one-hundred years. From a small French seaside resort town to global domination, Karl brought to life the reach of the Chanel brand with little Chanel flags denoting the location of Chanel shops around the world.

The Chanel Fall-Winter 2013/2014 Ready-to-Wear collection like the night sky that was cast in the Grand Palais was a play of lightness and darkness. Dark, thick tweeds glistened with metallic threads woven through them mimicing twinkling stars in the dark sky. The silhouette was at times long and lean, while other pieces hit at the hip and then flared. Many pieces were accompanied by Karl’s now-signature “are they pants? are they boots? are they leggings?” leg coverings that sometimes gave the effect of high boots and at times the effect of pants. Either way, they looked great – especially in leather.

Probably the most striking item in the collection was the fur hat which Karl said was supposed to mimic Anna Wintour’s signature bob. I wasn’t a huge fan of the hat, but it added a bit more theater to an already cosmic presentation. My favorite part of the collection was the chain details – whether hanging loosely on boots, heavily stacked on wrists, or artfully draped over long hair – I can’t wait to see these pieces when they release.

What did you think of this collection? What was your favorite part?
