Chanel N˚5 Wins Fragrance Foundation FiFi Award

The winners of the Fragrance Foundation’s FiFi Awards were announced and Chanel N˚5′s “No.5: Train de nuit” won the award for Best Media Campaign.  As you may recall, the campaign for Chanel N˚5 feautured French ingénue Audrey Tautou and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who directed her in her breakthrough film, “Amélie.”

The campaign certainly deserves this honor as it was the best media campaign I have seen for a fragrance. Not only was the film beautiful, but all of the correlative marketing materials – from the website to print ads – were gorgeous and evocative of the classic Chanel N˚5 scent.

You can view Chanel’s “No.5: Train de nuit” below:

Vogue Paris March 09 Issue: All Things Coco Chanel

t’s been a while since I’ve had time to go to the bookstore and check out some magazines and I’m so glad I went when I did. I was able to still get a copy of Vogue Paris’ March issue which is devoted to all things Chanel. The cover is gorgeous and is an homage to the cover of Vogue Italia from 1992 that Steven Meisel shot. Now, I just need to learn how to read French. Image Source for 1992 Cover

More Chanel Films! “Chanel and Stravinsky: The Secret Story” Set for Release in 2009

Image of Chanel and Stravinsky, among others, from Chanel and Her World by Edmonde Charles-Roux

If this is not Chanel-mania, I don’t know what is!  Last year we saw the Lifetime made-for-tv movie depicting the life of Coco Chanel.  In a few months the premier of Coco Avant Chanel will hit theaters.  What’s next?  Another Chanel film of course!  The third in this string of Chanel films depicts the love affair between Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky.  Directed by Jan Kounen with Mads Mikkelsen starring as Stravinsky and Anna Mouglalis as Chanel.  The duo met in Paris and even worked together on Georges Balanchine’s “Apollon Musagete” – Igor Stravinsky wrote the music and Mlle. Chanel designed the costumes.  Chanel and Stravinsky: The Secret Story (working title) releases later this year – stay tuned for updates!

Read below for a synopsis on the backdrop of the film:

Paris 1913, Coco Chanel is devoted to her work and madly in love with the handsome and very wealthy Arthur ‘Boy’ Capel.

At the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Igor Stravinsky premieres his “Rite of Spring”. Coco attends the premiere and is mesmerised. But the revolutionary work is too modern, too radical: the enraged audience boos and jeers. A near-riot ensues. Stravinsky is inconsolable.

Seven years later. Now rich, respected and successful, Coco is devastated by Boy Capel’s death. She meets Stravinsky again – a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris after the Russian Revolution. The attraction between them is immediate and electric.

Chanel Liquidated by Zevs

ZEVS, is the conceptual artist behind the Liquidated Chanel Logo (Zurich, 2007) above. He also created a chilling performance art video of the piece using a female back as his canvas.

Also, take a look around ZEVS site while you’re there. It’s a great take on the Google layout.

Karl Lagerfeld Creates Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2009 Paris-Moscou Silent Film

Karl Lagerfeld directed a 10-minute silent film, documenting the early years of Gabrielle Chanel, to coincide with a showing of Chanel’s Paris-Moscow, a luxury pre-fall ready-to-wear collection.  The homage was fitting since her early years were heavily influenced by French men, and Russian men, alike.  The film was shot in 2 days and rather than use extras, Lagerfeld recruited actual workers from the atelier.  “I cannot take extras,” Karl stated. “They don’t know how to touch the clothes.”

The idea of a silent film is really new, even though the method itself is a bit antiquated.  In a time when we’re constantly bombarded with technology, it’s quite refreshing to sit back for a minute in silence and just watch.  “Today, people are ready for silent movies again, as they spend time — hours, I would say — looking at text messages and e-mails,” Karl stated. “I always loved silent movies.”  It seems like this is the year for Chanel on film, first Lifetime, now this, and next year the feature film.  I cannot wait to see this – I feel like with Karl directing this ship, it will be the most accurate, (and probably best looking), portrayal of Mlle. Chanel’s early life.  The show and mini-film will be shown tonight in Paris.
