Chanel: The Little Black Jacket Photo Shoot with Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld

“The CHANEL jacket symbolises a timelessly fashionable form of nonchalant feminine elegance: it belongs to every era” – Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel sent a video of a behind-the scenes look at the making of the The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic jacket revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld. Watching this video is like watching the dream team of fashion at work with Peter Philips doing makeup, Carine Roitfeld styling and Karl Lagerfeld photographing. I’ve always wanted a Chanel Little Black Jacket and now I want one even more!

The images for this latest project were shot in Cannes, in the South of France, and then in New York, before finishing up in Paris in Karl Lagerfeld’s studio. Over a hundred models and celebrities have been captured by the designer’s lens. Actors, artists, singers, rock stars – the book’s impressive line-up encompasses all aspects of contemporary culture today including Georgia May Jagger, Carine Roitfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, Virginie Ledoyen, Akuol de Mabior, Virginie Viard – and they all wear CHANEL’s uniquely timeless and versatile little black jacket in their own special way.

The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, will be available in bookstores beginning Autumn 2012.

Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear Collection Details

Chanel Fall Winter 2012 2013 Ready to Wear Collection Details

Last week Chanel presented its Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear collection and accessory-wise this was not my favorite show – don’t hate me, I’m just being honest. I found that the cuffs with large crystals sometimes read a little bit New Age-hippy-dippy to me. That said, there were also spectacular pieces like the collars/chest plates, the sexy line of the shoes, the mesh gloves (and the length of the gloves!) and the handbags (not counting the crushed velvet ones). I’m sure as more detailed images are released I will find more to love. For now, we’ll have to content ourselves with these…

Karl Lagerfeld Interview – Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear

“Chanel is about life, dressing women for life.” -Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld echoes the sentiments of Coco Chanel and carries on the tradition of “dressing women for life”. In this video Karl Lagerfeld talks about his inspiration for the Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear show, explains the silhouettes and use of materials, and even drops a hint about the Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Haute Couture inspiration – it may be a bit childlike. Whatever it is, I can’t wait to see!

Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear Collection

Chanel Fall Winter 2012 2013 Ready to Wear Collection

“[N]ature makes a good designer, no?” – Karl Lagerfeld, on the Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear collection inspiration (WWD).

Karl Lagerfeld transported us to a place crystallized in time with larger-than-life stalagmites jutting through the floors of the Grand Palais in Paris and shooting toward the skies.  The purple-grey tones set the mood for the 2012/12 fall-winter ready-to-wear collection.  Lagerfeld’s quip about nature being a good designer is evident from his taking inspiration from nature for many of his previous shows including glaciers, burnt embers of the earth and the sea.

Referring to the crystals, Lagerfeld stated, “[t]hese shapes are millions of years old”, yet somehow they managed to inspire silhouettes and shapes in apparel that were new.  Karl Lagerfeld has played with the skirts over pants look for a few seasons and he continued it again for Fall-Winter 2012/13.  I admit, I am not a fan of this look – I like either pants or skirts – not both at the same time.  That said, by pairing them together we see the flexibility you have to wear either or both and it’s nice to have options.  My favorite items – apparel wise – from this collection are the cropped, ankle-length skinny pants. I’ve been hemming my pants to this length lately and seeing this look on the runway made me feel like Uncle Karl approved.

You all know I love Chanel but I was not a fan of the overall silhouette – simply because I felt like it wasn’t very flattering or pretty.  The rounded shoulders were ok but the belling out at the hips of the coats and the skirts over the pants threw me off with some looks.  It looked like something that would work only on the bodies of super-models, and even on them I didn’t think it was the most flattering.  That said, the artistry, as always was spectacular.  The rich tweeds, the delicate lace, the finishes on the fabrics to give them a metallic sheen and most of all the luxurious feathered pieces were all stunning in their deceptive simplicity.

Chanel Fall Winter 2012 2013 Ready to Wear CollectionAccessory-wise this was not my favorite show either – don’t hate me, I’m just being honest.

All in all, I think this was a successful collection but it’s almost a relief to see a Chanel show and know that I won’t be pining away for every single item in the show.  I’ll need a little breathing room to save for pieces from the next collection (or prior collections!).  View the full collection below…

Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear Beauty

Chanel Fall Winter 2012 2013 Ready to Wear Beauty

The makeup at the Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear show was very minimal with all emphasis drawn to the distinguished eyebrows on the models. From far away, the look was a bit curious but close up, the look is nothing short of spectacular. The crystallized eyebrows were made by Maison Lesage, the embroidery house purchased by Chanel as part of PARAFFECTION -a plan to keep the artisanal trades alive. I love that Karl Lagerfeld and Peter Philips decided to play up a feature like eyebrows in a new and unexpected way. I’m just wondering how this look will trickle down to the streets. Until we figure out a way to crystallize our eyebrows we’ll have to be content with Notorious (face) and Frenzy (nails) – two new hit colors for Fall-Winter 2012/13.

Peter Philips, Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup on the look he created for the Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 Ready-to-Wear show:

The inspiration for the makeup look came from a few key words and a sketch that Karl Lagerfeld provided: minerals, shading and eyebrows were the key words and the sketch showed a face with stone-lined eyebrows.

So the focus is on the eyebrows, which led me to interpret Karl’s drawing and the “mineral” emphasis by creating straight, graphic eyebrows.

I worked with the Maison Lesage to create sets of embroidered eyebrows. Each eyebrow consists of an anthracite gray sequins and pearl base, embroidered with several sorts and shades of mineral stones and crystals.

For the makeup in general, I wanted a matte finished skin and used CHANEL’s Mat Lumière foundation. The shading and sculpting of the face was achieved with Ombre Contraste a compact specially created for this show. The compact powder is a lavender/taupe coloured shade called Notorious that I applied to the eyelids and then straight down on the side of the face, in a contouring style. The rest of the face I kept nude, so as to keep the focus on the eyebrows.

For the nails I chose the new shade of Le Vernis called Frenzy (Fall 2012 Collection), which is totally colour coordinated with Notorious.
