Dior Stepping on Chanel’s Toes?

Dior Copying Chanel by aleXsandro Palombo
I recently came across this cartoon on Humor Chic by aleXsandro Palombo and he was able to capture in one image some of the sentiments I’ve been feeling for a while. When I saw the quilting of the Dior lady bags I always thought that it was an odd choice of fabrication. Sure, the shape is different but as far as I knew, quilting is not part of Dior’s lexicon – not the way the Chanel quilting is. But, now with this new style of bag they’ve also added a chain strap. Lots of companies are making quilted bags with chain straps these days, but when you look at the ad pictured above (and below) it starts getting a little uncomfortable. It seems like there is too much borrowed from Chanel iconography – the tweed jacket paired with the quilted bag is just too much. If this were a mass market brand it wouldn’t bother me because they’d be offering a look at a lower price. But this is DIOR – another storied couture house. I know Dior is having problems but this is just adding to it.

(Ok, the J12 is a bit close to the Rolex Submariner but at least Chanel did something new with it and made it in ceramic).  What do you think?  Am I being too territorial?  Do you think Dior is borrowing a bit too heavily from Chanel?

More Karl Lagerfeld Sketches of Coco Chanel

karl lagerfeld illustrations of coco chanel
Back in March we saw a sneak peek of illustrations Karl Lagerfeld did for a re-issue of Justine Picardie’s Coco Chanel: The Legend and The Life.  I came across some more illustrations and I thought I would share.  I never get tired of seeing Karl Lagerfeld’s illustrations…

Karl Lagerfeld’s Favorite Places in Paris

“In Paris I walk in the streets like peasants walk in the village where they are born. There is something in the air…Who doesn’t love Paris? You cannot compare it to any other city. Don’t ask me why but that is the way it is. I have houses in the south of France, Vermont and Monte Carlo but I never go there. I like houses for the sake of having houses, but in Paris I am most at ease.”

–Karl Lagefeld (Exposay)

Karl Lagerfeld may be German, but he loves the city of lights.  He was recently asked about his favorite haunts and here are some of his favorite places in Paris:

Shopping: “My favorite shop is Colette on Rue Saint-Honore. For jewelry I go to Lydia Courteille on Rue Saint-Honore and for books Galignani on Rue De Rivoli. For clothes I shop at Dior Homme.” (Exposay)

Nightlife: Raspoutine (58, rue de Bassano), Club Le Baron (6, avenue Marceau) and Le Montana (28, rue Saint-Benoît)  But Karl added: “I do not like going out, going to homes. I’m not the type who will go to a party. I do not need anymore, I’ve done a lot in my life. ” (Fashionlove via Google Translate)

Dining Out:  “I love La Maison Du Caviar (21, rue Quentin-Bauchart) because they have the best caviar in the world. There is nothing like this and go since I was sixteen or seventeen. I also love the atmosphere and food at the Café de Flore (172 bld Saint-Germain Paris).”  (Fashionlove via Google Translate)

Since the set of the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011 Haute Couture presentation was a recreation of Place Vendôme, it’s only fitting that Carnet Vendôme was handed out to all the guests at the show.  Carnet Vendôme is a guide that has information on the more than 60 Vendôme members, many of which are luxury retailers, including of course Chanel Fine Jewelry.  Carnet Vendôme is printed in three languages (French, English and Chinese) and for the current issue, Karl Lagerfeld drew all of the illustrations.  You can find Carnet Vendôme at Galignani bookstore for 10€.

First Look: Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s

karl lagerfeld for macys

The internet is abuzz with sneak peeks of Karl Lagerfeld’s 45-piece limited-edition collection for Macy’s.  It looks like Karl’s signature stuff: lots of black and white; high collars and tees with his face on them (which of course, I want!).  The ad campaign stars Coco Rocha shot by Karl Lagerfeld in what looks to be his library (or a recreation of it).  We’ll have to wait until the pieces are in Macy’s on August 31st but until then you can see the collection below and start deciding what pieces you want to get…

New Chanel Biography Coming Soon: Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life by Lisa Chaney

Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life

Everyone’s going cuckoo for Coco lately.  She’s always intrigued and her influence is far reaching, but the past few years have seen a tremendous surge of media devoted to Mademoiselle Chanel.  In the past three years we’ve seen two feature films (Coco Avant Chanel and Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky), a made-for-tv movie (terrible) and several biographies including Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie and a re-issue of Paul Morand’d biography, Coco Chanel.  Lisa Chaney is throwing her hat into the mix with a new biography out this November entitled, Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life.

Part of the intrigue of Coco Chanel was that she was a habitual liar and her life story changed each time she told it.  Habitual liar is maybe not the correct phrase, but she was a master of creating a persona – one that we are all still obsessed with today so it seems she was quite successful at it, non?  Lisa Chaney would like to shed some light on areas that are otherwise clouded and she “claims to have concrete evidence that the designer used drugs, embraced bisexuality and had an affair with Salvador Dalí while he was married.”  From that sentence alone I feel like Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life, may read more like a tabloid than a biography but only time will tell.  Press copies go out in October so I will let you know then.  In the mean time, if you can’t wait, Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life, is available for pre-order now on Amazon.com.

Maison Michel Fall 2011 Lookbook

Maison Michel Fall 2011 Ready-to-WearMaison Michel is a millinery atelier that was purchased by Chanel in 2002 as a part of PARAFFECTION, a solution to keep haute couture ateliers alive.  In doing so, Chanel is keeping a rich legacy of knowledge and tradition intact and preventing fashion techniques from becoming lost arts, as well as ensuring that haute couture remains robust.

Maison Michel makes all of the hats for Chanel but also releases its own ready-to-wear collection.  The Fall 2011 collection just released and the look book images are beautiful.  Shot by Karl Lagerfeld and featuring Clemence Poesy, Sasha Pivovarova and Anna Calvi, the simplicity of the black and white images is juxtapozed against the intricate details of the head pieces. I love the lace headbands, the spiked headbands – really I love every piece.  There’s something for different looks and occasions.   I also love that Maison Michel specializes in millinery and that is how Coco Chanel herself got her start.  Check out the look book…

It’s Official, Perfume Makes Women Feel Sexy

marilyn monroe chanel no5Ok, maybe it ‘s not totally official but a poll by a British drugstore surveyed 2,000 women to see what beauty tricks made them feel beautiful.  Not surprisingly, more than half of the women said their number one trick to feel sexy is to put on perfume.  This poll just confirms what Coco Chanel knew all along – why else would she say to “wear perfume where you want to be kissed”?
