    Karl, Avant Glasses

    Karl Lagerfeld without glasses

I like that you make it clear that you don’t want to be photographed or filmed without your sunglasses on. I don’t either. Who would?
    [KL:] They’re my burka.

Exactly. A burka for the eyes.
[KL:] A burka for a man. I’m a little shortsighted, and people, when they’re shortsighted, they remove their glasses and then they look like cute little dogs who want to be adopted.

(Vice Magazine, Interview with Karl Lagereld, March 2010).

Recent photos of Karl Lagerfeld are going around the interweb because well, people rarely see Karl without his signature black glasses.  I knew there had to be more photos of him without glasses so the search was on!  I hunted and gathered and here’s what I found.  Many of the photos are of young Karl before the glasses became his “burka”.  Check out Karl and his muscular (pre-chubby then slim again) bod…

    Karl Lagerfeld’s Sketches for Macy’s

    karl lagerfeld for macy's sketches
The first sketches of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs for his capsule collection for Macy’s surfaced last week. The line is set to launch in August in 250 (of 800) Macy’s doors, as well as online at Macys.com. Consisting of 45 limited edition styles, the average price of pieces in the collection is $100. Jeff Gennette, Macy’s Chief Merchandising Officer said that “it’s quintessential Lagerfeld but done at affordable prices…They’re the type you can see them from a distance and know they’re Karl’s.”

Karl Lagerfeld is scheduled to make an appearance in early September at the Macy’s in Herald Square, New York. I wonder if this will be tied to Fashion’s Night Out? I can’t wait for this collection to come out. It’s not often that you can buy clothing designed by Karl at an affordable price. These will definitely be investment pieces to keep – I’ll keep you posted as more info is released.

Then & Now: Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Design Inspiration

karl lagerfeld sketch of chanel dress 1931

Karl Lagerfeld has adopted Goethe’s famous motto: “Build a better future by expanding on elements of the past.” At CHANEL he has changed nothing and everything, interpreting CHANEL in his own way with elegance and wit. He would have certainly met Mademoiselle’s approval, since her ideas also often created mini-revolutions before becoming the industry standard.

    –Chanel Corporate

The above statement is on the Chanel website and it is eloquent and precise in describing Karl Lagerfeld’s deft hand in picking up where Coco Chanel left off.  You can see elements of Coco Chanel in all the collections but nowhere has this been more apparent than in the Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture collection, appropriately called Les Allures de Chanel.

In the sketch above, Karl lends his hand to a dress that Coco Chanel designed in 1931.  The first thing I noticed was the peplum – many pieces in the Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture collection highlighted this same very design feature.

Below you can see the 1920s influence of the flapper dress with low waist, straight silhouette and neckline with deep V detail.

In the next image you can see a Chanel print that may have inspired the fabrication of the dress on the left.  The black fabric with pops of color seem reminiscent of the Chanel print.

Finally, there’s the boater hat – the hat that started it all. The boater hat is the first hat that Coco Chanel started designing. She would buy them in bulk from the store and then customize them. Her simple straw hats were a fresh counterpoint to the heavily feathered hats of the day that made Coco wonder how women could think underneath all of that excess. Karl Lagerfeld knows the significance of the boater hat so I’m guessing that is why every model in the show was wearing one. An homage to Coco would be nothing without a boater.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of images of original Chanel designs but I will continue to look for comparisons to see how Karl has taken the legacy of Coco Chanel and given it a current spin in future collections.

Chanel Word on the Street: Karl Retiring? New Coco Perfume?

At any given time there is at least one rumor involving Chanel. I suppose that’s what happens when you keep info under lock and key – there’s going to be lots of speculation and rumor spreading.  There are two rumors I heard recently – no word on their authenticity but I’ll keep you posted…

    • Fashionista reported that they heard a rumor that the Chanel Fall/Winter 2011/2012 show was so late at night because it was Karl’s last show.  I really hope this is not true :(   I can’t imagine that (a) Karl would retire; and (b) that if it were his last show there would be a ton of fanfare.
    • Perfume Shrine reported that Chanel’s next perfume will be a flanker to its highly successful perfume Coco and will be called Coco Noir.  This is one rumor that I hope is true! I always love a good fragrance – and ad campaign!  I wonder who will be the face of Coco Noir?  Too bad Dior snatched up Natalie Portman :(

Photos of Karl Lagerfeld for S.T. Dupont Pens & Lighters

karl lagerfeld for s.t. dupont - prestige pens and lighter
We’ve been hearing about the collaboration between Karl Lagerfeld and S.T. Dupont, seen sketches and a first look. Finally we see the finished product of this partnership. Starting off with two collections Karl designed Prestige and Chic.

The Prestige set comes in red lacquer with gold accents and the Chic set comes in black lacquer and silver accents. Each set includes a lighter, fountain pen, roller pen and ballpoint pen.  These are lovely pens but I’m betting they are going to cost a pretty penny.

Chanel Evanescent Metamorphoses by Karl Lagerfeld

For Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 pre-collection, Karl Lagerfeld created a fashion film called Evanescent Metamorphoses. Featuring Kristina Salinovic, the film shows her metamorphosis from androgynous to feminine. The dreamlike atmosphere plays on the ambiguity between masculine and feminine.

Evanescent Metamorphoses is lovely and probably one of Lagerfeld’s more successful films. It’s simple and elegant – perfect for showcasing the new collection.

    Karlisms: Karl Isn’t Stressed Out

Imagine Fashion recently posted an interview with Karl Lagerfeld where he dishes on what he’s wearing, upcoming projects like illustrating more books, writing and illustrating a children’s book about Coco Chanel and creating movies.  He also discusses the pressures of being a designer and dispelling the notion that designers are overworked.  Here’s a short clip of the interview:

You can see the whole interview on The Peripatetic Fashionista.

    First Look: Karl Lagerfeld’s Pen

    karl lagerfeld pen

A few days ago I posted about Karl Lagerfeld’s soon-to-launch S.T. Dupont pen and here’s a first look.  Not only does he love books but he’s also a “paper freak” and has so many pens he says: “I cannot count.”  This release appears to be the first of many as this partnership may be long term.  Alain Crevet, president of S.T. Dupont’s management board, stated about Karl Lagerfeld: “He has many ideas.” Indeed he does as can be seen from his six collections for Chanel, collections for Fendi, his eponymous line and his numerous collaborations.  I can’t wait to see a close up of this very, very expensive pen.

Each day more and more images surface online of the Chanel ads styled by Carine Roitfeld featuring Freja Beha Erichsen and photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.  Here are the latest shots – some are very racy.  I especially love the one of the Boy Bag – let the bag and the legs do the talking!
