Flash Back Friday: Chanel Fashion Show Video Medley

I watch this video every so often – I love that it’s a medley of different Chanel fashion shows ranging from the 1930s to 1983. One of my favorite things about this video is seeing Coco Chanel in action. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Flash Back Friday: Inès de la Fressange for Chanel

Ines de La Fressange Chanel

Inès de la Fressange was Karl Lagerfeld’s muse in the 1980s. What a great time to be his muse! She was the first model to sign an exclusive contract with an haute couture fashion house – in this case Chanel. The relationship between Karl Lagerfeld and Inès de la Fressange produced a large body of work as she was the face of the company for most of the 80 when Chanel re-emerged in 1983 until 1989. Their relationship simmered down when she decided to lend her likeness to create a bust of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic. Karl Lagerfeld and Inès de la Fressange reunited in the past several years and we even saw Inès de la Fressange walk the runway for the Chanel Spring/Summer 2011 show.

I’ve compiled some of my favorite videos, photos and ad campaigns featuring the lovely Inès de la Fressange. Enjoy!

French Coco by Chanel Ad

I can’t get enough of these ads – I don’t know the exact year but the print ads are from 1986 to 1988 so I believe the videos are from the same time. I hate to say this but I find the video below, a commercial for the U.S. market to be a bit silly. I much prefer the French ad, it’s much more chic and truer to the brand.

US Coco by Chanel Ad

Someone, please tell me what they are saying… and how amazing is that fashion show in the background?!

Flash Back Friday: Vintage Chanel at A Second Chance Designer Resale Boutique

vintage chanel a second chance

While I was in New York I had the chance to visit A Second Chance – a designer resale boutique that has an extensive collection of vintage Chanel jewlery, handbags, shoes and clothing. There are two locations, one in Soho and one on the Upper East Side and both are crammed with designer products. I could spend hours in each shop just discovering all the pieces – one item is better than the next.

The Soho shop has a nice selection of Chanel, but if you want to see the real deal collection then head up to the Upper East Side location. I just stared at the jewelry in the cases and pictured myself wearing all of it – at once! And if you want a 2.55 bag you can definitely get one here – they are not cheap, but they cost a lot less than purchasing a new one. While I was there I was shopping alongside Catherine Zeta Jones who was wearing Chanel shoes that she had purchased on a previous visit to A Second Chance.

I could go on an on about how amazing the selection at A Second Chance is (and I almost don’t want to share for purely selfish reasons!) but I’ll let the pictures do the talking. I only took photos of a fraction of what they have – click on the first image to see all of the images larger.

Chanel Heaven aka A Second Chance Resale

vintage chanel

I’ve been busy running around NYC so I haven’t had time to finish all the drafts I have started about the rest of the Cruise Collection (celebrity arrivals, etc) and the St. Tropez ephemeral boutique but I assure you, I will get to it.  I HAVE had time to go to Chanel Heaven aka A Second Chance Resale in NYC – both locations.  I will have a store review and interview of the owners coming soon but I wanted to leave you with a sneak peek – you KNOW I didn’t leave empty handed!

Flash Back Friday: Vintage Chanel Featured in Elle US Editorial

elle us october 2011 editorial vintage chanel

In October 2011, the U.S. edition of Elle Magazine published a fashion editorial featuring Victoria’s Secret babes Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes, Miranda Kerr, and Chanel Iman. Though shot last year, the shoot featured mouth-watering vintage Chanel accessories – some of it dating back to the 1960s (those gorgeous giant dangling 5 hoop earrings!!). The flashy editorial was styled by Joe Zee and photographed by Alexei Hay. Click on the first image to see all of the images larger in a slideshow. Enjoy and have a nice weekend!

Flashback Friday: Chanel Spring Summer 1986 Runway Show

Getting old footage of Chanel runway collections is difficult but it’s out there! I can across this video of the Chanel Spring Summer 1986 collection and it’s pretty awesome. At this point, Karl Lagerfeld had only been designing for Chanel for three years. I especially love the song that the video editor added to the video – it’s very appropriate for the time period. Enjoy!

Cindy Sherman Photographs Chanel

cindy sherman chanel
Cindy Sherman has new large-scale works on exhibit at Metro Pictures Gallery in NYC. The series of photographs is based on an insert she did for Pop Magazine that featured clothing from the Chanel archive. As she developed the images for exhibition she has since significantly altered the photos.

Each photo features Sherman wearing Chanel – ranging from pieces designed by Coco Chanel herself from the 1920s to contemporary pieces designed by Karl Lagerfeld. In each image she stares at the viewer amidst a background that in some cases is complimentary to the clothing, and in others is completely foreign. The background landscapes are photos that Sherman took on the island of Capri and on Iceland in 2010 during a volcano eruption. She manipulated the landscapes and gave them a painterly effect in Photoshop.

Fashion In The Streets: Chanel Sightings in San Francisco & The Alameda Point Antique Faire

I’ve been sitting on these photos for some time, I must admit that I see a lot more Chanel on the streets but I don’t walk around with my camera and/or phone out all the time so most of the time the Chanels just walk on by… But sometimes, I get lucky like I did at the Alameda Point Antique Fair.  It’s hard to know what faux or not – some are definitely fake, and some I just don’t know but I like seeing anything Chanel inspired….

Likely real.

Very likely real.

Faux, but really cute.

If they’re piled on the floor, I’m guessing they’re fake.

I also saw some gems in San Francisco like the blue purse, metallic ballet flats and the very fake (but very funny) sweat shirt…

Flashback Friday: Chanel Fall-Winter 1992/93 Ready-to-Wear

As a true Chanelphile, I love Chanel through the ages. From original Chanel designs, to current designs by Karl Lagerfeld I want it all. I especially adore the early Karl Lagerfeld years (he started designing for Chanel in 1983) of the 80s and 90s. When I have more disposable income it will go to acquiring more vintage Chanel from this time period. Until then, I’ll watch videos of the old collections and dream…
