Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance Beauty

The theme of the collection, Paris-Byzance is a great inspiration on it’s own. The links and associations with Chanel are rich and plenty.  Karl gave Sam (McKnight) and me a sketch giving us a rough idea of the direction he wanted for the look, from then the tone was set.  Karl also showed us the world-famous mosaic portrait of Theodora, the Empress of the Byzantine Empire Mosaic from the Saint-Vital de Ravenne Basilica, which very naturally became the inspiration for the show’s makeup. The portrait gave me a focus point : the red eye shadow/liner that she wears on the arch of her eyebrows. This look is all about light and rich textures. The choreography between gold, bronze, black and red can be easily personalized according to the desires of each woman.

- Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup

Chanel 2011 Spring/Summer Ready to Wear Beauty

Karl Lagerfeld showed me a sketch he had drawn of a girl with smoky eyes, so it was clear that we would put the focus on the eyes for this show. The inspiration for the color came from the black-white-green French garden that was recreated in the Grand Palais, from the glow that we can find in black, grey and white pearls, and the enamel that Karl integrated into the costume jewelry. I created deep, dark smoky eyes on a luminous fresh face with tinted, dewy lips. Nails were graphic and strong, and a thin black line was drawn in the hair.

- Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup

The beauty as the Chanel Spring-Summer 2011 Ready-to-Wear show will no doubt be oft-imitated as it was lovely.  Dark charcoal smokey eyes was the highlight of a seductive look that featured an otherwise natural face.  Lips had a hint of blush that was just a few shades deeper than natural lip color.  Hair was straight and pulled back tight with center and side parts accentuated with a thin straight black line drawn with eyeliner.  The nails always steal the show and Black Pearl looks like it will be a color that will surely be duplicated by mass market nail polish companies.  I love the black gunmetal look of it and it really does look like the beautiful iridescent grey of Tahitian black pearls.  On their toes, models wore Pearl Drop, a white pearly color.  Though Pearl Drop is nice, Black Pearl is definitely on my wish list for spring.

Peter used the following CHANEL products to create the runway beauty looks:

Skin prepared with HYDRAMAX + ACTIVE Nourishing Cream for Dry Skin

The Complexion: PRO LUMIÈRE Professional Finish Makeup SPF 15
POUDRE UNIVERSELLE LIBRE Natural Finish Loose Powder
ÉCLAT LUMIÈRE Highlighter Face Pen
CORRECTEUR PERFECTION Long Lasting Concealer

LE SOURCIL DE CHANEL Perfect Brows
MASCARA INIMITABLE WATERPROOF in Noir

The Cheeks: JOUES CONTRASTE Powder Blush in Espiègle (Spring 2011 Makeup Collection, available January 2011)

The Lips: ROUGE COCO SHINE in Boy (available April 2011)

The Nails: LE VERNIS Nail Colour in Black Pearl on the hands (Spring 2011 Makeup Collection, available January 2011)

Bleu de Chanel Fragrance for Men

Chanel is introducing a new fragrance for men this fall called Bleu, a scent created by Chanel’s “nose” Jacques Polge. Chanel describes the scent as:

The provocative fragrance opens with an intriguing wave of citrus fruits, mingled with the airy scent of a deep blue sea. Next, the zest of Grapefruit punctuates, followed by the tang of Peppermint, Pink Pepper and Nutmeg. Finally, in this initial impression, a touch of Ginger heightens the sharpness of the citrus.

As you may recall, earlier in the year we let you know that Martin Scorcese had directed an advertising film starring French actor Gaspard Ulliel – it was for this fragrance.  The advertising film Bleu de Chanel will be released later in August and Bleu will hit shelves this Fall.

Chanel 2010-2011 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Beauty

Chanel 2010-2011 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Beauty

On Tuesday, Chanel had its 2010-2011 Fall/Winter Haute Couture show at the Grand Palais in Paris with an “8-ton, 40-foot-tall golden lion, [with] its paw perched on an enormous pearl” serving as the backdrop. (WWD). The beauty at the show was very classic and simple:  soft eyes and cheeks with a strong red lip with nails to match.  I think it’s clean look for fall where makeup can tend to get heavy.  The overall look is very light but warm enough for the cold months.

Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup, used the following CHANEL products to create the runway beauty looks at the 2010-2011 Fall/Winter Haute Couture runway show in Paris:

Complexion:
PRO LUMIÈRE Professional Finish Makeup
POUDRE UNIVERSELLE LIBRE Natural Finish Loose Powder
ÉCLAT LUMIÈRE Highlighter Face Pen

Chanel 2010-11 Cruise Show Beauty

Chanel 2010-11 Cruise Show Beauty

Effortless, natural beauty, relaxed girls who are enjoying their holidays. That was the main idea behind the look for this show.

- Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup

Each collection brings a new makeup collection by Peter Philips.  Since he’s been on board, each season he creates a frenzy with limited edition nail lacquer colors and the Cruise 2010-2011 collection will no doubt do the same.  The laid back collection was paired with equally easy going hair and makeup.  The cosmetics were used to create natural sun-kissed looks and the nails featured Jade Rose and a new sky blue (yet to be released name) shade.  I’m guessing the blue was inspired by the azure sky and/or sea of St. Tropez.  Once we find out the name, the only question will be how much the new shade will sell for on ebay!

For the show in Saint-Tropez, Peter used the following CHANEL products to create the runway beauty looks that accompanied the Amber brown, absinthe and mint green, sky and navy blue, and bright pink prints of the collection.

Skincare: Skin prepared with Hydramax + Active Nourishing Cream

Complexion: Vitalumière Aqua Foundation (available March 2011)
Poudre Universelle Libre Natural Finish Loose Powder
Éclat Lumière Highlighter Face Pen
Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer
Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base

The Eyes: Ombres Contraste Duo Eyeshadow Duo in Taupe-Délicat (available in September 2010)
Le Crayon Sourcils Precision Brow Definer
Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Black

Lips: Soin Tendre Lèvres Hydra-Treatment Lip Care SPF 15
New lipstick pencils (not yet available)

The Cheeks: Soleil Tan de Chanel Sheer Illuminating Fluid

The Nails: Le Vernis Nail Colour in Jade Rose and a new pastel baby blue shade (not yet available)

Les Pop-Up De Chanel Summer 2010 Makeup Collection

LES POP-UP DE CHANEL SUMMER 2010 MAKEUP COLLECTION

LES POP-UP DE CHANEL SUMMER 2010 MAKEUP COLLECTION

Coco Chanel made tans chic, and now Peter Philips had concocted a summer cosmetics collection that will make bronzed skin glow.  Inspired by Mademoiselle’s idyllic seaside vista, Les Pop-Up De Chanel, boasts a fresh crops of colors that will surely be the cult favorites of the summer.  Neon pink, sunny coral and brilliant turquoise are sure to complement any glowing tan (faux or not).

The limited edition collection features Soleil Tan de Chanel (Moisturizing Bronzing Powder), Rouge Allure (Luminous Satin Lip Color $32), Aqualumière (Sheer Color Lipshine SPF 15 $29), Aqualumière Gloss (High Shine Sheer Concentrate $27), Gloss Fluo de Chanel (Brilliant Lip Shine $27), Lèvres Scintillantes (Glossimer $27) and Le Vernis (Nail Colour $23).

I’m especially loving Le Vernis Nail Colour in Nouvelle Vague – it’s a bit reminiscent of the ever-popular Jade but it’s a bit more blue evoking the Mediterranean Sea. All of these colors looks great together and will take you from the beach to le club. Les Pop-Up De Chanel Summer 2010 Makeup Collection hits stores in May 2010. I know I can’t wait to get my Nouvelle Vague!

Scorsese Directs Chanel’s Men’s Fragrance Ad Starring Gaspard Ulliel

Martin Scorses Directs Chanel Men's Fragrance Ad Starting Gaspard Ulliel

A month ago I reported that Martin Scorsese was spotted at Moto in Brooklyn shooting a new Chanel ad campaign. Word has just surfaced that the ad he was filming was for Chanel’s new men’s fragrance. The ad features French actor Gaspard Ulliel.

Andrea D’Avack, president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauté, stated that “The ads have been shot in New York, the city which is so inherently part of Martin Scorsese’s cinematographic vocabulary.” (WWD)

Chanel has a long history of working with acclaimed film directors from Baz Luhrmann (with muse Nicole Kidman) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (with mus Audrey Tautou ), both for Chanel No.5 at different times.

Chanel works with movie directors because they bring depth, emotion and what we call in French ‘a supplement of soul,’ or an added dimension,” said D’Avack, pointing to films such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and “Goodfellas” as examples of Scorsese’s vision. “In the case of Martin Scorsese, we knew we would definitely have a man’s world full of complexity that is also adrenaline-driven, and of course, amazing images. (WWD)

This is the first men’s ad of its kind that I will see and I’m looking forward to it!  I love Martin Scorsese and I think he’s a wonderful choice to film a men’s fragrance ad.  He’ll be able to capture the essence of “man” without coming off as to macho – can’t wait to see!

Chanel is Bringing Lipstick Back: Introducing Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour

Chanel is Bringing Lipstick Back: Vanessa Paradis for Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour

Chanel is Bringing Lipstick Back: Vanessa Paradis for Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour

They say lipstick sales are “recession proof” – in fact – sales usually go up. Why? Because it’s an inexpensive way to look beautiful and freshen up your look. Chanel is taking note and bringing lipstick back to a young customer base that is infatuated with lip gloss. This March, Chanel is introducing Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour – and bringing back the lost art of sexily applying your lipstick.

Vanessa Paradis, the French actress (and Johnny Depp’s leading lady) is the face of the campaign and this is not the first time Paradis has worked with Chanel.  Andrea D’Avack, president of Chanel Fragrance & Beauté, stated: “Vanessa has been very linked to the house over the years, and she represents a young, sophisticated woman who we also believe will be the consumer for Rouge Coco.”  Print and TV ads have been shot though it’s still unclear whether TV spots will be placed in the U.S.

The Rouge Coco line has 30 shades and each hue is named after an influential part of Coco Chanel’s life – Camelia, Mademoiselle, and Paris – to name a few.  The shades come in one of four color families Roses-Pinks; Reds-Corals; Violets-Berries, and Neutrals-Browns and will be available in different global markets.

Like many Chanel cosmetics, the packaging takes it’s cue from Chanel’s history with black and gold detailing, interlocking C’s and the Chanel name embossed into each lipstick bullet.  The Rouge Coco collection debuts in March with each lipstick retailing for $30 at fine retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Chanel.com.
