Chanel Evanescent Metamorphoses by Karl Lagerfeld

For Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 pre-collection, Karl Lagerfeld created a fashion film called Evanescent Metamorphoses. Featuring Kristina Salinovic, the film shows her metamorphosis from androgynous to feminine. The dreamlike atmosphere plays on the ambiguity between masculine and feminine.

Evanescent Metamorphoses is lovely and probably one of Lagerfeld’s more successful films. It’s simple and elegant – perfect for showcasing the new collection.

12 Days of Chanel: Chanel Films

Coco Chanel is one of the most intriguing women of the 20th Century.  Since it’s difficult to get a hold of interviews of Mademoiselle (especially if you don’t read French), I love to watch films about Gabrielle Chanel.  Of course, they are movies and artistic license is applied liberally, but it’s nice to see her come to life if only for a few hours.  I also love seeing the clothing and the sets – a bit like seeing history repeat itself – and getting a glimpse of the time period in which she lived.

All three of the films are good in their own way but very different:  Chanel Solitaire was the very first and is only available on VHS, Coco Before Chanel documents Chanel’s rise to fame and Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky follows an illicit love affair later in Chanel’s career.  I’ve seen all three and my favorite is Coco Before Chanel but they are all worth watching.  These DVDs would make a great gift or stocking stuff for any fashion or movie buff and are available on Amazon.com.

Life Imitating Art: Chanel Heist!

Last year, Karl Lagerfeld created Vol de Jour, a short film starring Lara Stone and Baptiste Giabiconi going from Chanel boutique to Chanel boutique, and stealing from each shop. If you haven’t seen the video you can see it here…

Earlier this week, 45 bags were stolen from the Chanel Boutique in Boston on Newbury Street. The bags were valued at an approximate total of $100,000! I wonder if they were inspired by Vol de Jour! Probably not, but it’s interesting how life can imitate art – even when it’s not intentional…

Coco Before Chanel Nominated for 12th Annual CDG Awards

Coco Before Chanel

The nominees have been announced for the 12th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards and not surprisingly, Catherine Leterrier was nominated for her work in Coco Before Chanel. The specific category is “Excellence in a Period Film” and though I haven’t seen the other films in the category, I think she should win. It’s a very difficult task to do the costumes for the most iconic person in fashion history and I think she met the challenge. The Award ceremony will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Coco Avant Chanel Premier in Paris

Coco Avant Chanel Premier in Paris

For anyone that’s a regular M.I.S.S. reader, you know that I’ve been keeping close tabs on the Chanel films coming out this year.  Coco Avant Chanel premiered in Paris on Monday night at the Champs-Elysées theater.  Audrey Tautou, who plays Coco Chanel in the film, wore a Chanel couture floral bustier dress (um, what else would she wear??).  Tautou’s co-star Alessandro Nivola, who plays Chanel’s love interest Boy Capel, was at the premier – though he got rid of the moustache he had to sport for the film.  The pair definitely look cute together and I’m guessing they’ll have great chemistry on film.

Coco Avant Chanel documents Chanel’s early life from her childhood in an orphanage and ends with her debut runway show.  The film is set to release in the U.S. later in the year – I can’t wait to see it! Images

Coco Avant Chanel: Behind The Scenes

Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel

If you’ve been around these parts then you know that I’m very excited for Coco Avant Chanel, the biopic of Coco Chanel.  I was snooping around the web and found film stills and they are lovely.  I knew from the start that Audrey Tautou was an excellent choice to play Mlle. – she looks so much like her – down to the way she holds her cigarette.

One can tell from the stills that the creators of the film went through great lengths to make sure the costuming was accurate:   Karl Lagerfeld is overseeing the re-creation of the costumes and accessories.  And, who better considering he is one of the few people with access to the Chanel archives?

The film is set for release in France on April 22nd and a U.S. release date is not yet set.  To see the trailer, check out my previous post.
