Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Collection: Les Allures de Chanel

Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Collection: Les Allures de ChanelThe Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture collection, called Les Allures de Chanel, was an homage to Mademoiselle and her mysterious charm. The Grand Palais was recreated into Coco Vendôme, a dark recreation of Place Vendôme, the home of The Ritz where Coco Chanel lived. There was an eery Film Noir mood with the set cast in black with neon lights outlining the structure and windows. Sitting high atop the center column was a robotic version of Coco herself, replacing the statue of Napolean that you would find at Place Vendôme. Models walked around the square – some say the shape that inspired the Chanel N°5 bottle – amid lampposts as if taking a late night stroll.

For Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture collection it seems Karl Lagerfeld set out to answer one question: How many ways can I design a peplum? The answer is a collection that shows a vast array in many fabrics. The peplum was popular in the 1940s – the era of Film Noir‘s hey day.  Cascading, layered, tweed and beaded.  Any kind of peplum you could imagine was present.  My favorite was one worn by Stella Tenant (pictured above) with layered pieces of fabric that were all hand cut.  The peplum curves were echoed in rounded shoulders.

In contrast to the curves of the peplum drawing attention to the waist, we saw straight styles that eliminated the waist made popular in the 1920s, notably by Coco Chanel.  Many dresses in fact seemed directly inspired by collections designed by Gabrielle Chanel (stay tuned for an upcoming post with images!).  In addition to the straight dresses, another early Chanel reference was the boater hats that all of the models wore – a style that Chanel also wore and popularized.  Karl took us from the 1920s, to the 1940s and then to the 1950s when she returned to the world of fashion and gave us her infamous tweed suits.

Les Allures de Chanel has something for every Chanelphile to appreciate and admire.  I myself never tire of seeing all of the exquisite detail that goes into every item.  Even pieces that look simple are deceptively so.  That Karl can make something so intricate look simple is a testament to his genius.  I especially loved the lace over the eyes – something we’ve seen before in the Spring 2007 Chanel Haute Couture show – but something I don’t tire of.  From what I could see there was a seriously smokey eye underneath the lace veil – something that goes perfectly well with the Femme Fatale / Film Noir feel to the collection.  More to come soon on the set, inspiration and details of the collection.  For now, enjoy all of the images and videos…

Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Haute Couture First Look

Earlier today Karl Lagerfeld unveiled the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Haute Couture collection.  I’m gathering info and images but here’s a little taste of what’s to come.  Lagerfeld never fails when it comes to drama and respecting the heritage of the brand.  More images and a review coming soon!

Blake Lively in Chanel Haute Couture at LA Premiere of Green Lantern

blake lively in chanel haute couture at green lantern premiere

Blake Lively is using her Chanel connections to the fullest getting decked out in Chanel at any opportunity – and who can blame her?!  In her latest red carpet appearance at the LA Green Lantern Premiere, Blake livened up the red carpet in a white Chanel Haute Couture gown.  I went through the Spring 2011 collection and I didn’t see it in the runway picks so it may be couture in the truest sense of the word and made just for her.  The white sheer gown with floral applique looked lovely on Mlle. Lively.  I usually have a pet peeve for sheer bottom dresses but if you have legs like Blake then you can get away with it.

I love that she paired the dress with gold accessories especially the piled on bracelets and the gorgeous camellia in her hair.  Her hair and makeup were really simple and pretty.  The disheveled side braid is a refreshing take on red carpet hair.  I think this one of Blake’s best looks – what do you think?

Kirsten Dunst Wears Chanel on Visit to Turkey

kirsten dunst chanel haute couture spring 2011

Kirsten Dunst is riding the Chanel wave from the Cannes Film Festival across the Mediterranean to Turkey where she’s been spotted wearing Chanel to two events.  Dunst wore Chanel Haute Couture from the Spring 2011 collection to a Courtney Love performance that she attended with Ryan McGinley. She seems to like this collection – because this is the second dress from this collection that she’s worn that features the sheer panels and intricate beading. The delicateness of the dresses complement the delicateness of the actresses features. She also looks really nice in the pale cream/pink/white colors that she’s been wearing.

kirsten dunst chanel resort 2011/12 antibesDunst also attended a presentation of the Chanel Paris-Byzance Métiers d’Art collection at the luxurious Ciragan Palace Kempinski Hotel wearing a cream dress from the recent Chanel 2011/12 resort collection shown in Antibes.  How wonderful to see the Paris-Byzance collection in the place that inspired the collection!   I love this dress – especially the hem and sleeve length – so elegant yet sexy – reminds me of the 1940s.  I do however think that the dress might be a little tight on Kirsten in the bust area – either that or the way she’s posing is making the dress bunch up a bit in the neckline area.

I’m wondering if Kirsten Dunst wearing all this Chanel is a prelude to a campaign?  I suppose only time will tell…

Karolina Kurkova and Uma Thurman in Chanel Haute Couture at the 2011 amfAR Gala

Uma Thurman and Karolina Kurkova wore Chanel Haute Couture to the 2011 amfAR Gala. Both dresses are lovely yet very different. Kurkova’s white mini dress is extravagantly adorned with strands of pearls giving it a look of opulence.  Thurman’s grey gown was a sleek, simple mermaid gown with flowers along the neckline.  Both dresses are gorgeous but I really love the simplicity and color of Thurman’s gown.  What do you think?

Dianna Agron in Vintage Chanel Haute Couture at the SAG Awards

Finally some Chanel Haute Couture on the red carpet!  Glee actress, Dianna Agron shimmered in a navy and black vintage Chanel Haute Couture gown.  Navy and black is a dangerous combination but when done right it shines – literally.  I love the silhouette, the beaded lace overlay, the bow at the waist and the length.  Dianna Agron wears it well.  She paired her Chanel dress with Ferragamo shoes, Fred Leighton jewels and a Ferragamo clutch.  Nicely done!

Chanel 2010-2011 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Review

The Chanel Fall/Winter 2010-2011 Haute Couture show at the Grand Palais was a grand spectacle complete with a forty-foot lion.  But even the lioness could not outshine the clothing and accessories that Uncle Karl designed.

The overall silhouette was a play on layers, length and shoulders.  Strong shoulders have been popular for a few seasons now, but the Chanel strong shoulder was different.  It’s very soft and round, but strong in the sense that it is exaggerated.  Almost all of the looks had the rounded, sculptural shoulder paired with a 3/4 length sleeve.  The looks that didn’t have the rounded shoulder were sleeveless and the models’ bare shoulders were reminiscent of the roundness of the sleeved jackets.

Lagerfeld also played with length in this collection.  From 3/4 sleeve jackets, to long blouses paired with cropped jackets, to-the-knee skirts and dresses to calf-length dresses and skirts.  Most of the hemlines were on the short side – even the formal dresses.

The color palette is one suited for fall – rich jewel tones like garnet, topaz, and sapphire paired with rich browns, camel and black.  Lush fabrics like warm tweeds paired with luxe fur; brocade fabric with rich beading and embroidery, dresses embellished with strings of pearls.  The overall look is very luxurious and rich – think ladies who lunch.

I must confess, the clothing was not my favorite this season.  I wasn’t a very big fan of the big rounded shoulders.  What stole the show for me was the accessories.  These boots were definitely made for walking – slouchy, ruched, metallic, beaded, and with the iconic black toe cap – every look had an ankle boot to match.

The accessories that had me drooling were the large chunky bangle bracelets – bejeweled with chains hanging and layered – the bracelets were the perfect match for the 3/4 sleeve and sleeveless looks.  Brooches and belt buckles had similar looks with chains dripping from them with lion heads at the center.  A collection certainly made to make you roar!

Chanel Haute Couture on the Academy Awards Red Carpet

82nd Annual Academy Awards: Oscar Night Fashion

Fashion at the Oscars: Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture

Chanel Haute Couture made its way onto the red carpet in LA tonight at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.  Both Diane Kruger and Sarah Jessica Parker wore Chanel Haute Couture and both looked lovely.  SJP’s gown was one of my favorites of the night – the neckline and back of the dress are stunning.  I’m always surprised at how few women wear Chanel on the red carpet, I’m glad that 2 women took the leap this year.

Chanel Spring 2010 Haute Couture – “Neon Baroque”

The much anticipated Chanel Spring Haute Couture 2010 show came and went and it temporarily made me forget I was sitting in dreary, rainy San Francisco and made me excited for spring.  Karl Lagerfeld ditched the trademark black, white, and navy for a much lighter palette – one reminiscent of cotton candy and sherbet.

The collection consisted of tweed suits, short swing dresses and gorgeously intricate column gowns – all in candy colors from strawberry, peach, lemon and vanilla.  Silver beading and metallic accents kept the pale shades from becoming boring and added just the right amount of pizazz – even Karl traded in his signature black tie for a metallic silver one! Chanel trademarks like pearls, camelias, bows and ruffles were all present – but used in different ways.  Instead of rows of pearl necklaces, a pearl collar elegantly held a dress up.  Ever flirtatious, the collection was very feminine and embodied Le sacre du printemps.

One of my favorite aspects of the show was the hair – it was swept up in a heart shape with giant bows and flowers front and center.  Many of the bangs featured a white streak (the Dior Spring 2010 Haute Couture show also had white streaked hair – is this a new trend for Spring?).  Makeup was kept light & sweet so as not to distract from the clothing.  I’m still waiting to see detail shots but it looks like the hot new nail colors will be white and metallic silver – but I’ll have to see the close-ups to be sure.

In the mean time, you can see the full collection below.

Paper Trail: Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2009

Chanel Couture Spring 2009

Chanel Couture Spring 2009

A few weeks back, Karl Lagerfeld’s quote about “bling” heard ’round the world so people were waiting with anticipation to see what Uncle Karl would do for Chanel‘s Spring 2009 Couture collection. After all, is it possible to have couture without all the accouterment that may, how do you say . . . bling? Yesterday, Monsieur Lagerfeld showed the world that you could still have luxury without ostentatious displays of wealth. He showed us that true luxury is in the details, in the materials and the thoughts and ideas behind it all. His inspiration for the couture collection was very simple: “The idea was a white page,” Lagerfeld stated. The paper theme was seen everywhere from the set design to the clothing and accessories.

The collection was mostly white with a few black accents and some black and white prints. The pieces were subtle with clean lines, cinched waists and strong shoulders. The textiles are gorgeous and evoke paper through sheerness, texture and weight. Known for kicking off many a nail color trend, the nails were short and white, a complete departure from the blacks, golds and blues the house made so popular last year. The set was created under the direction of Stéphane Lubrina, who, with a team of 40 people and over 15 weeks, created 6,700 assorted-species blossoms. And of course, the house wouldn’t dare use paper made from trees – rather all the paper was glass-based. The gorgeous head pieces were also made from paper by Katsuya Kamo, Japanese hair stylist extraordinaire. The detail of the hair pieces is incredible and I’m wondering what’s going to happen to all of those treasures after the show? They are little works of art in and of themselves and I hope they find a happy home. If they need one, I can provide one! Read the full story for more images from the show and catch the video below to see Karl Lagerfeld being interviewed, Keira Knightley’s take on the show and some runway footage.
