Freja Beha Cries Chanel Tears

freja beha crying chanel logo tearsChanel News posted images of the making of the “Chanel Cocomation” – the campaign that Karl Lagerfeld shot and Carine Roitfeld styled.  By now we’ve seen the images in magazines and online but I don’t recall seeing any images with Freja Beha crying Chanel logo tears.  I wonder if there is also a little film go go along with the campaign? Here are the rest of the behind-the-scenes images…

Chanel 2011/2012 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Makeup By Peter Philips

Chanel 2011/2012 Fall/Winter Haute Couture Makeup By Peter Philips
In the early stages of the Haute Couture Collection, a few key elements came up.  Karl mentioned the masculine/feminine silhouette, the decor (Place Vendôme), the fact that we were going to do a show at night and the flashlight shoes. That’s where the veil/burglar idea came from. The focus is on the eyes, but through a veil. Skin is pure with a hint of blush and the lips are velvet peach. On the nails we used Chanel’s classic “Le Vernis – Blue Satin”, a timeless night blue.

I wanted to create an eye that would read through a veil, that’s why I used “Illusion d’Ombre in Mirifique”, a pitch black with starlight sparkles. Eyes that see in the dark and nails the shade of night. And a soft touch of “Rouge Allure Velvet – La Furtive”, perfect for stealing kisses.

–Peter Philips on creating the Chanel Makeup Looks for the Fall-Winter 2011/2012 Haute Couture Show

The makeup used in the Haute Couture show – though behind a veil – made a statement.  The dark smokey eyes are lovely, especially as they play off of the darkness of the set and the black sparkle of the floors.  Even with the lace veils you could see there was some serious makeup going on under the lace.  I love that Philips used Blue Satin – one of my favorite nail colors, it’s perfect to evoke the midnight feel of the show.

Here are the products Peter Philips use to create the looks:

Skin prepared with HYDRAMAX+ ACTIVE NOURISHING CREAM

Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Haute Couture First Look

Earlier today Karl Lagerfeld unveiled the Chanel Fall-Winter 2011/12 Haute Couture collection.  I’m gathering info and images but here’s a little taste of what’s to come.  Lagerfeld never fails when it comes to drama and respecting the heritage of the brand.  More images and a review coming soon!

It’s A Stick Up!

chanel gun heelsI don’t like guns.  I don’t think anyone should have them.  But what about a Chanel gun?  No, Chanel isn’t making guns but that doesn’t mean other people aren’t taking liberties and interpreting what a Chanel gun would look like.  Of course, Karl Laferfeld gave us a little hint when he let loose Chanel gun heels on the runway in Miami for the Chanel Cruise 2009 Collection.  But of the guns pictured below I can say for certain that 2 of the 3 are not made by Chanel – the third remains a mystery but I’m betting that it’s not authentic.  Either way, they are clever in their own way…

1.  Chanel 001 Cosmetic Gun by Ted Norton -Dutch jewelry designer Ted Norton created a gun that cleverly stows 7 “essential” items a lady may need upon leaving her home:  “[Chanel] lip gloss, antique hairpin, 18 carat gold toothpick, a vile of perfume, a 50 gram 24 carat gold bar, a USB stick and a Viagra pill.”  The gun costs $17,000.  Source.

2.  Chanel Gold Pistol

I don’t know anything about this gun other than a friend owns it and she emailed me a photo to ask me if I knew anything about it.  My hunch that it isn’t real but you never know…

Peter Philips on Creating Particulière

Chanel Particulière

The Los Angeles Times recently interviewed Peter Philips about creating some of the most popular lipstick and nail polish shades. Sometimes, some of the best colors are unplanned. One of my favorite Le Vernis, Particulière, was a happy accident. Peter Philips explained,

“They were mixing colors in the lab and I said, ‘Stop!,’ ” Philips recalls. “I took a look at the shade and thought, ‘This is kind of particular. It’s not gray and it’s not beige, it’s kind of weird.’ ” He brought the shade to the women he works with and they couldn’t wait to put it on. “I know when I like a color, but that doesn’t mean it makes a good nail polish,” said the Belgian-born Philips, who can be credited with helping to legitimize funky nail polish colors and making them acceptable for all women to wear, no matter their age or occupation.

Once he had the Particuliere color, he needed a collection in which to put it. And he heard that Karl Lagerfeld’s spring 2010 runway show was going to be set in a barn. “In French, the color is taupe, which is a kind of animal, a mole,” explains Philips. “I said, ‘Karl, I got a taupe for your barn.’ “

Chanel Is One of the World’s Most Powerful Luxury Brands

Millward Brown Optimor released its annual report on the 100 most valuable brands in the world. In the list of top ten luxury brands, Chanel ranked as number four. The report noted: “Brands that protected their exclusivity – such as Chanel, Hermès, or Cartier – were better insulated from the recession than more accessible luxury brands.”

Fashionista interviewed Millward Brown vice president, Pierre Dupreelle, and his colleague Daniella Segal and this is what they had to say about Chanel:

This year’s ranking: 4
Last year’s ranking: 4
Overall Brand Value: Up 23% to $6.823 billion
Dupreelle thought this was one of the most interesting stories of the year. After an 11% decrease in value last year, Chanel came roaring back. While they were one of the last online hold-outs, when Chanel did take it digital they set the bar high for luxury brands in the future. They are very careful about how they sell (you won’t find a Chanel bag online), and have managed to keep the exclusivity of the brand intact while having a strong digital platform.

The report also noted that customers felt like they were buying into the exclusivity of the brand by purchasing aspirational products such as lipstick or sunglasses – I told you so!  Though the luxury market grew 19% it still has not yet achieved pre-recession levels – though it is getting close.
