Flash Back Friday: Chanel Fashion Show Video Medley

I watch this video every so often – I love that it’s a medley of different Chanel fashion shows ranging from the 1930s to 1983. One of my favorite things about this video is seeing Coco Chanel in action. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Kate Moss at The Ritz, Paris for Vogue

In the latest issue of Vogue, Kate Moss is photographed at The Ritz in Paris, including the Coco Chanel suite (which is not the suite she spent her last days).  The photographs are by Tim Walker and this is one of the most gorgeous fashion editorials I’ve ever seen.

Chanel Links: Big Giant Update!

Lots of Chanel news the past month that I didn’t get to post for one reason or another but is still post-worthy – check out my round-up of not-to-be-missed Chanel news….

Not everyone can afford Chanel – here’s how to make your own. The Londoner

Last August I mentioned that Coco Chanel’s vacation home, La Pausa, was for sale.  Well, it’s been scooped up off the market for an undisclosed amount but the property was listed for about €40 million.  Riviera Times

There has been some controversy about the crystal cuffs shown at the Chanel Fall 2012 show – some say that Chanel ripped off Pamela Love.  I don’t think they did anything intentional but Chanel has refused to produce the cuffs.  Whatever. I don’t think the Pamela Love cuffs are all that original – they’re fancy versions of flea market crystal jewelry (just my 2 cents).  Fashionista

Word on the street is that Chanel has received approval to design a new store on Bond Street in London that will also be the new U.K. headquarters for the brand. You can bet there will be some cool exclusive product and parties when this boutique opens up. Vogue UK

Book Review: “Coco Chanel, An Intimate Life” by Lisa Chaney

coco chanel an intimate life by lisa chaney
I have been reading Coco Chanel, An Intimate Life by Lisa Chaney for months now and I have finally finished it! It didn’t take me a long time because I didn’t like it, rather I quite enjoyed it. I simply couldn’t find the time to sit and read, one of my great relaxing pleasures. Yes, I could have skimmed the book and written a quick review but I didn’t think that would be fair to you and I really wanted to give the book a full read and I’m glad I did.

Last year so many biographies of Coco Chanel came out and I was wondering if they would all have something new to add and surprisingly, they all do. The general story is the same and Lisa Chaney does a fine job of recounting the tale that Coco told. What distinguishes Chaney’s telling is her historical context. Lisa Chaney dives deep into the societal and cultural mores, and explains in detail what was happening around Chanel. Giving Chanel’s story context helps paint a more detailed picture of the life that Coco Chanel lived. As someone who loves history, I really enjoyed this aspect of Coco Chanel, An Intimate Life and it shed more light on the mysterious Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel, An Intimate Life is available online at Amazon.com.

Photos and Letters from Coco Chanel Auctioned

serge lifar coco chanel ballet russes
Last week there was an auction of Serge Lifar’s Ballet Russes archive in Geneva, Switzerland. Serge Lifar was a good friend of Coco Chanel’s and the principal dancer of the Ballet Russes in the late 1920′s – a Ballet company that Coco Chanel patronized and she designed costumes for.

Serge Lifar’s archive included signed photos of Coco Chanel and a letter from Coco to him. The letter from Coco Chanel was estimated to fetch $500 at auction but instead the winning bid was $450,000. The letter was accompanied with two black and white photos of Coco Chanel. That’s better than any autograph, imagine owning something written in Mlle. Chanel’s own hand!  This is a big deal for so many reasons, especially since she did not keep written correspondence instead destroying her paper trail.  The collection also included some photos of Coco Chanel that I have not seen before – view all the Coco Chanel-related materials that went to auction below…

Chanel: The Little Black Jacket Photo Shoot with Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld

“The CHANEL jacket symbolises a timelessly fashionable form of nonchalant feminine elegance: it belongs to every era” – Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel sent a video of a behind-the scenes look at the making of the The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic jacket revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld. Watching this video is like watching the dream team of fashion at work with Peter Philips doing makeup, Carine Roitfeld styling and Karl Lagerfeld photographing. I’ve always wanted a Chanel Little Black Jacket and now I want one even more!

The images for this latest project were shot in Cannes, in the South of France, and then in New York, before finishing up in Paris in Karl Lagerfeld’s studio. Over a hundred models and celebrities have been captured by the designer’s lens. Actors, artists, singers, rock stars – the book’s impressive line-up encompasses all aspects of contemporary culture today including Georgia May Jagger, Carine Roitfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, Virginie Ledoyen, Akuol de Mabior, Virginie Viard – and they all wear CHANEL’s uniquely timeless and versatile little black jacket in their own special way.

The Little Black Jacket: CHANEL’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, will be available in bookstores beginning Autumn 2012.

Adieu, Mademoiselle

mademoiselle coco chanel by douglas kirkland

Prime Minister François Fillon of France banished the term “Mademoiselle” from official forms and registries today. The change was made after months of pressure from French feminist organizations who argued that distinguishing a woman based on marital status is sexist as there is no male equivalent.

Coco Chanel was addressed as Mademoiselle even through her eighties since she was never married. I wonder how she would feel about this change? There are many Mademoiselles, but only one Coco Chanel.

Chanel Joaillerie Spring 2012 Chanel Cosmos watch open

Last month I posted about Chanel Joaillerie’s Spring 2012 collection which pays homage to the 80th Anniversary of Coco Chanel’s 1932 Bijoux de Diamants collection.  I happened to find more images online and each of these pieces is breathtakingly beautiful.  I have never before seen such exquisite jewels.  Each piece in the collection is one of a kind and is set to tour the world in a traveling exhibition.  I hope the exhibition comes to a city in the U.S – I would love to see these pieces up close and personal.
