Buying Into The Chanel Fantasy: Le Vernis Nail Colour

I remember when Chanel Vamp came out in 1994. It was the first time I saw how a nail color could take hold and create a frenzy among fashion and beauty mavens. I was in college, and definitely wasn’t buying designer polish, but I was following the trends enough to know that Chanel Vamp was creating history.

Flash forward to 2008 when Peter Philips was named global creative director of Chanel Makeup. The first nail color created under his direction was Gold Fiction. Like liquid gold, Gold Fiction revived the frenzy of having the must-have color at every fashionista’s finger tips. Since then, every collection has featured a set of limited edition colors that have sold out at makeup counters and sold for over $100 on ebay. (Jade has reportedly created the most frenzy with prices reaching $165 on ebay. Laurel Pinson).

What is it about the Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colours that cause this mass hysteria?

Yes, the colors are ground breaking in that they are trendsetters.  That is, many mass market nail color brands follow suit and create copy cat colors.  But I don’t think that’s the main reason.  I think that the Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colours are an easy in to the Chanel Fantasy – “the gateway drug“, if you will.

With basic Chanel flats starting at over $500 and Chanel 2.55 bags starting at over $2,000, Le Vernis Nail Colour is a steal at $23 to $25 a bottle.  Expensive for nail polish? Yes, and some might say that a person is crazy for spending that much on nail polish.  But, when you compare that to the cost of other Chanel products it’s a drop in the bucket.

Most people can’t afford the Chanel shoes, bags and clothing but are Chanelphiles nonetheless (I can attest to that!).  Le Vernis Nail Colours are a way for fledgling Chanel fans to buy into the Chanel fantasy.

Chanel 2010-11 Cruise Show Beauty

Chanel 2010-11 Cruise Show Beauty

Effortless, natural beauty, relaxed girls who are enjoying their holidays. That was the main idea behind the look for this show.

- Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup

Each collection brings a new makeup collection by Peter Philips.  Since he’s been on board, each season he creates a frenzy with limited edition nail lacquer colors and the Cruise 2010-2011 collection will no doubt do the same.  The laid back collection was paired with equally easy going hair and makeup.  The cosmetics were used to create natural sun-kissed looks and the nails featured Jade Rose and a new sky blue (yet to be released name) shade.  I’m guessing the blue was inspired by the azure sky and/or sea of St. Tropez.  Once we find out the name, the only question will be how much the new shade will sell for on ebay!

For the show in Saint-Tropez, Peter used the following CHANEL products to create the runway beauty looks that accompanied the Amber brown, absinthe and mint green, sky and navy blue, and bright pink prints of the collection.

M.I.S.S. NYFW: Fashion’s Night Out at Chanel Soho

Fashion's Night Out at Chanel Soho - Jade Nail Collection

Fashion's Night Out at Chanel Soho - Jade Nail Collection

Fashion’s Night Out was like a big party in the streets of NYC.  We started out uptown on 57th Street where all the luxury stores have flagships and then made our way down to Soho.  The scene uptown was very subdued compared to the partying in the streets of Soho.  From Opening Ceremony’s block party to the Kid Cudi listening party at A Bathing Ape, the streets were jam packed with shoppers looking for good deals and celebrity sightings.  One of my favorite destinations?  The Chanel Soho boutique.

Just in time for FNO, Chanel debuted its Jade nail colour collection: Jade and Jade Rose.  A pale pink and pale green, the Jade collection is a perfect match of the elements that inspired the colors.

As part of the FNO festivities Chanel offered free manicures using Jade and Jade Rose at the Soho boutique.  People sipped champagne, did some shopping, and got their nails did – all while shaking to the beats provided by Alexa Chung.  Having stopped by a few FNO events, this was definitely one of my favorites.  You can find the Chanel Jade nail colour collection and Chanel boutiques and online at Chanel.com.
