Karlisms: Karl Lagerfeld’s Glasses Balance Ugly Faces

In a video for the release of Karl Lagerfeld’s new line of sunglasses Karl Lagerfeld states one of the selling points of his glasses is that they “balance ugly faces.” Oh, Karl you have such a way with words but I still love you.

Karlisms: Best of 2011 By MTV FORA

karl lagerfeld karl who tote bag

You know I love my Karlisms and MTV FORA was nice enough to compile a list of Karl Lagerfeld’s Best Quotes of 2011 – here is the list reprinted from MTV FORA.

“I’m very much down to earth, just not this earth.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“I like chocolate. I don’t eat it, but I like the smell of it. People can drink with their eyes; I can eat with my nose. I would love to have a perfume based on chocolate.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“I have a guest house because I don’t want people in my home.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“She’s an Upper West Side girl with real learning. She’s not just an idiot from nowhere…There are so many third-rate people now who are more famous than people who should be famous, but sometimes people who could or should be famous are very boring, too.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“That’s why I sleep alone. My hair is curly, and that’s why I have my ponytail. I look like a madman, like something out of a horror movie,”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“I’m like a rock singer with one-night stands on the road. I’m here for two days in New York; I leave in the morning early. I come back for Anna Wintour’s party at the Met, then again at the end of May for a prize I get from the Gordon Parks Foundation.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“I don’t do meetings. At Chanel, there are no meetings. At Chanel, we do what we want, whenever we want and it works. And Fendi is the same.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“No, because I’m afraid it won’t grow again. And I’m not very gifted for hairdos. This is the quickest thing in the world. It takes less than five seconds.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“No, I have someone who comes to the house and washes it, puts in the dry shampoo, and takes care if it because I have no time.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“I’m not mad for thongs.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

“I’m trying to think of the last time I had onions.”

— Karl Lagerfeld

Karlisms: Sneak Peek of CNN’s Karl Lagerfeld Interview

Karl Lagerfeld is always quotable but this short clip of a CNN interview that is airing this weekend is a goldmine. I can’t even imagine what the full interview will be like. I do know that I want to tune in and watch Karl wax poetic about his work.

“Fashion: Backstage Pass” premieres Saturday, October 15 at 2:30pm ET on CNN.

Karlisms: Karl Can Do Whatever He Wants

Orrefors by Karl Lagerfeld

Architectural Digest interviewed Karl Lagerfeld about his collaboration with Orrefors.  The following is republished from Architectural Digest

Architectural Digest: Home accessories by Lagerfeld?

Karl Lagerfeld: I wanted to design glasses for my houses, something I had never done. Simple as that. I told Orrefors, “I am only interested in this one thing—are you interested?” They were, and here we are.

AD: Chanel was fine with it?

KL: I can do whatever I want. Exclusivité is very démodé.

AD: You even helped design the packaging.

KL: It was a package deal! No, let’s say “total concept.” Orrefors was extremely pleasant to work with. At many companies there are too many little chefs who make things more difficult.

AD: Did you go to Sweden to work on the collection?

KL: I never go anywhere. I do sketches and make phone calls, and people visit. It’s more fun to come to Paris.

AD: Why the limited palette?

KL: I am a black-and-white person. Some grays, some dirty pinks, not flashy pinks. I have never been obsessed with color, I cannot explain why. I wanted to become an illustrator as a child. Black-and-white always looks modern, whatever that word means.

AD: Each glass comes with a matching coaster, which you call a “coupette.”

KL: Glasses ruin the surface of a table. You need a little napkin or a bit of paper, like for beer drinkers. Now we have a glass coaster for the glass. All the pieces are the same size on the bottom, so the coupettes fit everything. I don’t understand why nobody ever thought of it before.

Because Uncle Karl, you are a design genius.

Karlisms: Karl Lagerfeld on Michelle Obama, The Royals and Dominique Strauss-Kahn

karl lagerfeld

Karl is never at a loss for words – here are some of his memorable recent quotes…

On Michelle Obama:

“I love Madame Obama, but not in terms of clothes…I like her face, the cleverness of her face. Her face is stronger than the clothes.”  (Washington Times)

On The Royal Wedding Outfits:

“But this was not a collection, this was the choices of this kind of woman for this kind of ceremony: the bad proportions, the ugly hats, the short skirts on fat legs.” (Grazia)

On Watching Television:

I like if I’m on TV; watching it is not my specialty. I prefer what I see in my mind-I get second-rate images delivered there for free. But I’m not too bad on TV. I commented on the English [royal] wedding for the [French] state channel. Normally they don’t have a huge audience, but with me doing it, we had nearly 50 percent and the others had only 30 and 20 percent. An event like that is fun to do because I can make jokes, and jokes of the lowest kind are not against my mentality. But I don’t want to do it all the time, hmm? (Grazia)

On Dominique Strauss-Kahn:

I love DSK. I love his wife. They are great people and when they came back to Paris I sent them flowers. But you know, for people in politics, it’s very embarrassing. On the left they had hoped he wouldn’t come back, because I think other people want his job. And on the other side…but even in America, Clinton survived his blow job. (Business Insider)

On Drugs:

I never smoke, I never take drugs, I’m never drunk, because I like only what I’m doing — work, reading, learning, sketching, taking photos. For the rest, my lack of passion or interest for this kind of thing makes it perhaps too easy for me to judge others. I’m surrounded by people who drink and take drugs. It doesn’t bother me at all, even when I know it’s bad for them. I’m not teaching them. (Fashionologie)

Karlisms: Karl Lagerfeld Chats With Carine Roitfeld for Interview Magazine

interview magazine

The latest issue of Interview is full of Karl Lagerfeld.  He shot the images of Anne Hathaway looking stunning and he also interviewed Carine Roitfled, and took photos of her as well.  Of course, if you get Karl talking then you KNOW you are going to have a lot of quotable material.  Here’s just a taste…

Karl Lagerfeld to Carine Roitfeld on her children…

No one can say that you don’t take care of them. You’re also lucky because they are very beautiful. It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter.

Karlisms: Karl Isn’t Stressed Out

Imagine Fashion recently posted an interview with Karl Lagerfeld where he dishes on what he’s wearing, upcoming projects like illustrating more books, writing and illustrating a children’s book about Coco Chanel and creating movies.  He also discusses the pressures of being a designer and dispelling the notion that designers are overworked.  Here’s a short clip of the interview:

Karlisms: “Facebook is a flawless object”

Imran Amed, the Founder and Editor in Chief of the Business of Fashion, interviewed Karl Lagerfeld for The Luxury Channel during the International Herald Tribune’s Heritage Luxury Conference.  In the interview Karl Lagerfeld states that “Facebook is a flawless object.”  I’m not sure he knows what Facebook is, but I think Uncle Karl is pretty flawless :)
