Chanel Spring/Summer 2011 Ad Campaign

Images of Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaign (as printed in the Elle UK Feb 2011 issue) have surfaced online and for the first two shots, Karl has gone with his favorite models of the moment – Baptiste Giabiconi and Freja Beha.  You may remember, the Spring/Summer 2011 collection was inspired by Last Year at Marienbad and the Grand Palais was transformed into a garden setting from the movie.  The ad campaign seems to be following a similar vein as they are photographed in a serene garden with lush foliage.

12 Days of Chanel: Brooches

Nothing says ladylike elegance like a brooch. Added almost anywhere, a brooch can jazz up an ensemble and give you a polished look. Most often found on lapels, you can add a brooch to sweater sets, blazers, or outerwear. You can even fashion a hairpiece, or update a belt or fasten a scarf with a brooch. Every season Chanel releases at least one Camelia brooch and one double-C brooch. A Chanel brooch is a lovely way to add a bit of luxury to your looks without breaking the bank.

Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance Collection

“After the Grand Palais, I had to do the opposite.”

-Karl Lagerfeld, on the intimate setting for the Pre-Fall 2011 collection presentation, Style.com

If I had to summarize the Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance Collection in one word it would be opulence. Hearkening back to the Byzantine Era and Empress Theodora, Karl Lagerfeld resurrected the intricate mosaics and gold filigree of the lost empire.

A somber palette of black, navy, royal plum and gold highlighted the textured knits and intricate tweeds. Mosaic patterns of churches were replicated on dresses and necklines and gold was woven through textiles. The accessories were gorgeous and evoked the lavishness of the Byzantine Empire. Gold coin necklaces, bib necklaces, chunky cuff bracelets and filigree headbands are all fit for an Empress. Over the knee boots and sandals were the footwear of choice and completed the looks.

Though inspired by antiquities, Karl Lagerfeld kept the collection current with hints of mod 1960′s London. Pea coats, straight-leg pants, swing coats and shift dresses gave a modern feel to the otherwise classic sumptuousness of the Byzantine-inspired pieces.

This collection was truly beautiful and I love how Karl can take something so small, like Coco Chanel’s signature Verdura Cuffs (wit Byzantine crosses) and create a whole collection around it.  The Métiers D’Art are always a stand out because, as the name implies, it’s a collection focused around artisan skills and gorgeous craftsmanship.   I can’t wait to see the detail shots of the accessories and the look book which was shot in Ravenna, Italy where Byzantine mosaics still exist. Stay tuned for more info! Until then, please enjoy images from the collection.

Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2011 Paris-Byzance Show Invitation

Ah! It’s time for my favorite Chanel collection of the year – the Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall collection.  Each year, Karl Lagerfeld selects a locale to inspire his pre-fall collection and this year he was inspired by Byzantium because of Coco Chanel’s love of Byzantine-style jewelry.  The show is on Tuesday, December 7th.  Stay tuned for more info – I can’t wait to see this show!
