Michelle Williams Wears Chanel Couture to the Oscars

Last night at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams wore a pale grey Chanel Haute Couture gown. From afar the gown looked very simple and chic (and very on point on the minimalism trend) but upon closer examination you could see the exquisite details of the beading on her gown. Finally, someone wore Chanel Haute Couture on the red carpet! It was a lovely dress and she should definitely top a best dressed list.

I went through the runway images and couldn’t find this exact dress – it is of course couture and made for her – so it seems that Karl Lagerfeld may have tweaked an existing design. Of course I always have something to say and if I were choosing an Oscar gown I probably would have gone with a different look but it was definitely a step up from her daisys at the Golden Globes!

Chanel at the Indpendent Spirt Awards

Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts walked the grey carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards in Chanel dresses. A much lower-key event than the Oscars, the ladies opted for more casual looks but still looked lovely.

Natalie Portman for Miss Dior Cherie

I’ve been saying it for about three years now that I thought Natalie Portman SHOULD be the face of a Chanel fragrance.  She’s gorgeous, intelligent, talented and elegant – all things that embody Chanel.  I always thought she should have been selected over Keira Knightley – don’t get me wrong, Keira is gorgeous – I just don’t think she represents Chanel the way someone like Natalie Portman could.

Well, Chanel slept on Natalie Portman and Dior scooped her up as the new face of Miss Dior Cherie.  Directed by Sofia Coppola, the ad portrays Portman as an ingénue set to the tune of Je t’aime… moi non plus performed by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg.

This isn’t Sofia Coppola’s first ad for Dior, she did the first Miss Dior Cherie ad a few years back. I think she’s a great choice for directing the ads because she always nails that feminine je ne sais quoi paired with a great soundtrack and great style.

Keira Knightley’s new ad for Coco Mademoiselle should be coming out soon – we saw images of the crew shooting it a few months back. I wonder how it will compare to the new Miss Dior Cherie ad since they are both targeting a younger audience…

Lindsay Lohan Wears Chanel to Court

I have to say that I find it totally annoying that Lindsay Lohan is in the news everyday for her missteps with the law and I usually don’t pay much attention – except when she’s wearing Chanel. When I saw footage of Lindsey stepping out in this outfit I loved it immediately. When I heard the pants and sweater were Chanel then it came as no surprise as the ensemble is so chic, yet very sexy. I would wear this, or a variation of this outfit everyday and be a very happy girl.  Lindsay paired the outfit with YSL pumps and a Lanvin clutch.

Chanel + Colette Ephemeral Boutique (Pop-Up Shop)

My favorite brand is teaming up with my favorite Parisian boutique, Colette, to create a separate ephemeral boutique (or pop up shop as we Americans like to say) from March 1st to 10th on 336-340 rue Saint-Honoré.  The boutique will span 200 m² and has an industrial feel as the setting is “a former garage turned into a giant living display space.”

The fashion installation will be a multi-sensory delight with visual arts, musical performances, fashion, and sweet treats “resulting in a fun-fuelled, creative mix and match by Chanel and Colette with a rock ‘n’ roll vibe.”

Chanel 2011 Spring-Summer pieces will be sold alongside select pieces by young designers curated by Colette.  Artists including Kevin Lyons, Soledad, André, Fafi and SO-ME will be on hand to customized legendary Chanel bags.  Karl Lagerfeld designed a collector’s doll and other special Chanel products will be sold including bag charms, helmets and cameras.  For this momentous occasion, Chanel created a compilation CD and scented candles.  To top it off there will be a Chanel nail bar and a cupcake bar!

This may be the best pop-up shop EVER.  I almost want to buy a ticket to Paris to see this for myself.  I hope the special edition products – especially the doll – will be sold online!  I NEED ONE!

Here’s a breakdown of the events – if you live in Paris and you go – I will be living vicariously through you!

Friends of Chanel are special guests to be discovered as in house DJs, and five artists invited by Colette will be customising Chanel bags, upon request.

March 1: Kevin Lyons, designer and illustrator, will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 2: Camellia demonstration by a Lemarié craftsman, 3pm – 6pm
March 3: The illustrator Soledad will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 4: Harpsichord performance by the pianist and composer Maxence Cyrin, from 5pm
March 5: Graffiti artist André will be customising bags, 3pm – 6pm
March 7: Graffiti artist Fafi will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 8: Chanel nail bar, 3pm – 6pm
March 9: SO-ME, graphic artist and illustrator, will be customising bags, 4pm – 6pm
March 10: Chanel nail bar, 3pm – 6pm

Chanel introduces a trio of favorite colors that will keep you looking peachy keen called “Endless Summer” – the perfect colors to complement your tan (which of course, Coco made fashionable).

I was a history major so I love history – add fashion to the mix and we have a winner! Chanel News gave us the inside scoop on the history of the decor of the Spring 2011 Haute Couture show.

More history! This time, Chanel News gives us some info on the architectural history of iconic 31 Rue Cambon. It turns out Coco was a real estate mogul too!

Chanel had a site devoted to Valentine’s Day – it’s still up and definitely worth checking out. I NEED the double lion head bangle bracelet!

Chanel News just posted a video that shows the details of some of the pieces from the Spring 2011 Haute Couture collection.  I wish I could see all of the pieces close up – many of them look simple from afar but upon closer examination you see all of the intricacies – just gorgeous!

Chanel Mobile: “Glamour on the Go”

Last week, Chanel released a mobile version of their website that allows you to purchase skincare, makeup and fragrance from your mobile phone.  I’ve seen many mobile versions of websites – mostly blogs (LaChanelphile mobile coming soon!) but this is the first I’ve seen with e-commerce capability.  Now, if you need a Chanel No. 5 fix you can get it anytime, anywhere.  If you want to see collections, the latest shows and the Chanel blog, well, there’s an App for that (sorry, I couldn’t help myself).   You can download the Chanel App on iTunes and see Chanel Mobile on your phone.

Chanel Window World Booklet & Poster

My day brightened a bit when I went to pick up my mail and was pleasantly surprised to find something from Chanel!  Enclosed in the packet was a Window World poster and booklet.  The poster is double sided and the booklet contains images from the Window World campaign (that you can view online).  It was a little pick me up in the afternoon and I’ll add it to my Chanel collection now.

Coco Chanel, Paris, 1964 by Henri Cartier-Bresson

I was at the SF MOMA earlier this year and was happy to see a portrait of Mlle. Chanel in a photography exhibition of the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson.  It shows Coco in her apartment at 31 Rue Cambon in 1964.  I love how Chanel looks deep in her thoughts and it’s not posed and smiley.  It just looks like Cartier-Bresson captured a quiet moment when she was reflecting.
