Word on the Street: News from the MISS Network 07.20.12

It’s summertime and the living’s easy – and it’s very difficult not to get distracted by the pool in my backyard calling out my name.  It doesn’t help that I have a two-year old that wants to go in the pool, to the park, to the zoo – she needs constant entertainment.  So between singing nursery rhymes and having dance parties with the Tiny Dancer, these are the top stories from the MISS Omni Media network.

1932 – Chanel 80th Anniversary Bijoux de Diamants Exhibition

chanel 1932 jewlery collection
Back in February I mentioned that Chanel was celebrating the 80th anniversary of Coco Chanel’s only fine jewelry collection created in 1932 called the Bijoux de Diamants collection. To commemorate the anniversary, Chanel has designed a collection of fine jewelry inspired by Coco Chanel’s jewelry designs featuring five themes that were Coco’s signatures: the sun, comets, feathers, fringes and ribbons/knots. The designers added a sixth theme – the lion – because Coco Chanel was a Leo and surrounded herself with portrayals of lions. The collection is now on display in an exhibit called simply “1932″.

Only one piece remains from Coco Chanel’s original 1932 collection – a comet brooch – and the brooch is on display at the 1932 exhibit. The exhibit is on display at the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris starting September 14 – 23, 2012. The exhibit will travel to New York in October and to Tokyo in November. I hope that I can make the New York exhibit! You can see a bit of the exhibit in the video below.

Sponsored Post: Ultrabook™ Inspired by Intel – the LBD of Computers

vintage chanel belt Vintage Chanel belt

When I was asked by Intel to snap and share images of designs that inspire my love of fashion it was a no brainer. As a Chanelphile, you can see Coco Chanel’s influence everywhere in how women dress almost one-hundred years after she started designing. Today, I’m sharing with you some pieces from my closet – most are Chanel – some are just Chanel-inspired – but all reflect my love of the Double C.

What I love most about Chanel are the design elements that were so important to Coco Chanel – simplicity, functionality and comfort. Her classic designs look as modern today as they did sixty years ago. And like all good design, her works don’t just look good, they feel good and are comfortable.

First Look: Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura Mon Shu Girl Video

shu uemura karl lagerfeld
In June I posted about Karl Lagerfeld’s collaboration with Shu Uemura on a cosmetics capsule collection for Holiday 2012. Now we get a first look at his collection in a little animated video where we meet Mon Shu Girl, the cute mascot for the Shu Uemura x Karl Lagerfeld collection. Karl Lagerfeld has long used Shu Uemura eyeshadows for his sketches and we see his work come to life before our eyes in the form of Mon Shu Girl. We see some hints at what we can expect to see in the collection but we’ll have to wait until the end of the year to get our hands on the collection. For now, enjoy Mon Shu Girl…

Chanel Opens Covent Garden Pop-Up Shop

chanel covent garden pop up shop

On July 24th, Chanel is opening a pop-up shop in the heart of Covent Garden just in time for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The shop will be home to many exciting activities, events and products as it stays open through December 2012. On opening day, you’ll see mimes wearing Chanel jewelry pointing the way to the Chanel boutique which will have the limited edition makeup collection Bleu Illusion.

Chanel is rumored to have teamed up for a fragrance collaboration with a local flower stall. Vouge UK reported:

In addition to exclusive new products, which will launch at the boutique over the next seven months, planned highlights will include a Chanel treasure hunt; educational workshops; consultations with leading Chanel make-up experts; a luxurious space dedicated to facials and pampering; an outdoor area that will recreate the look and atmosphere of being backstage at one of the label’s catwalk shows; and a very special festive surprise come Christmas.

Chanel will also be announcing more events throughout the coming months so stay tuned for more exciting news! I can’t wait to see more. I’ll keep you posted.

First Look: Maïwenn for Chanel Eyewear Campaign

chanel maiwenn eyewear

Last month I wrote that Karl Lagerfeld had chosen Maïwenn to be the face of the Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 eyewear campaign.  I recently found images online of the campaign shot by Karl Lagerfeld featuring a very natural looking Maïwenn wearing little makeup and with tousled hair.  Maïwenn stated:  “I had just come back from holiday, so I was feeling great…Maybe that’s the reason it looks simple, natural and spontaneous. And I think I’m wearing hardly any makeup — just a touch of concealer.”

The Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 eyewear campaign features the Tweed collection of glasses which features tweed molded onto the rubber stems of glasses.  This is the first look at the Tweed eyewear collection that I’ve seen and I can’t wait to see more.  I’m sure Chanel used the latest process to give the most realistic look.

The Chanel Fall-Winter 2012/13 eyewear collection will retail for about “200 euros to 380 euros, or $415 to $492 at current exchange.”  The campaign is set to publish in magazines starting in September issues when the glasses will be available for sale.

Flash Back Friday: Coco Chanel’s Scottish Getaway Gets a Facelift

coco chanel duke of westminster

In 1923 Coco Chanel met the Duke of Westminster – at the time the wealthiest man in Britain – and the two began a love affair that lasted for most of the remainder of the 1920s. Coco Chanel took time between fittings and collections to visit her lover at the Duke’s vast array of estates. In 1926, he purchased Rosehall Mansion and he let Coco Chanel decorate it to her taste. Two years later, as the relationship was cooling the Duke of Westminster sold Rosehall and since then, has had successive owners and has fallen into disuse and disrepair over the last sixty years. Now, architect firm Bell Ingram has been hired to resuscitate Rosehall’s prior grandeur and transform it into a boutique hotel.

The director of the project, Iain Cram said his challenge was to meet the requirements of the Highland Council while still trying to “preserve and reinstate the Chanel influence.” Because Rosehall is the only property outside continental Europe with interiors designed by Coco Chanel (and reportedly the home of Scotland’s first bidet), Rosehall is a treasure in Coco Chanel history. Though Rosehall has seen better days, a template of sorts remains in the way of Coco Chanel’s designs including remnants of deep beige wallpaper, hand-painted French wallpaper and even a green color scheme used for the cloakroom – all of these remaining details will help guide the design process.

Cram stated:

However while it will be impossible to save all the features, we have a real chance to restore this cultural gem to something like its former glory. Our aim is to work very closely with planners to try to utilise every possible remaining feature of the building to ensure its conservation, as well as preserving the influence of Chanel as far as possible…We don’t know what the final interior design will look like, but we do know that it will have a strong nod to the 1920’s era and the time when Coco Chanel lived there.

I’m glad that Rosehall will be revived to its former glory and I hope the designers do stay true to Coco Chanel’s aesthetic. One of my dreams is to put together a “Coco Chanel” tour and visit or stay in the places she stayed. I hope one day that includes Rosehall Mansion.
