New CHANEL N°5 Ad with Brad Pitt – There You Are

brad pitt chanel no5

Chanel premiered the new Chanel N°5 ad featuring Brad Pitt. Contrary to the usual format, this is the first fragrance ad campaign featuring a man for a women’s fragrance. When I first heard that Brad Pitt was the face of Chanel N°5 I wasn’t in love with the idea and when I first saw the ad it was not my favorite. But, the more I think about it, the more I like it. It’s lingering on my mind – very much like the scent of Chanel N°5.

The ad features Brad Pitt – and the only thing close to special effects is the play on light. Sometimes he’s well lit and sometimes there’s a bit more of shadow. He stand looking off speaking abstractly, but then you realize he is talking about a woman who is as he says “My luck, my fate, my fortune…” Though he may be apart from his lady, her memory and her scent is always with him.

The new Chanel N°5 ad is directed by Joe Wright, the director of Atonement, Anna Karenina and the two Coco Mademoiselle ads featuring Keira Knightley. Wright was commissioned to direct several short commercial films each evoking the memories, thoughts and dreams of a man being seduced by a fragrance. In short, Wright stated, ““Each resembles a short poem.”

Though many of the comments on Youtube are less than complimentary, now that I’ve had some time to watch the ad a few times I think that the comments of naysayers are nearsighted. First, when people are confronted with something different, the knee-jerk reaction is always negative. When confronted with something unfamiliar people feel uncomfortable and it’s easier to say you don’t like something rather than think about what it is that you like or dislike.

More importantly, I think that selling a women’s fragrance by having a man talk about a woman and her fragrance is really smart. Wearing perfume is one of the oldest tricks in the play book of seduction – hearing a man talk about how successful a scent is sounds like a really clever way to market it.

What do you think about the new ad?? Comment below!

Drop of Chanel N°5 – That’s All You Need

This video was uploaded by Chanel a while ago but then removed and then recently added again. Rather than featuring a famous face, the short film ad focuses on the iconic glass bottle. Chanel N°5 has been around so long that not much needs to be said – the fragrance can speak for itself – and in this ad it does…

Chanel Video: Le Baudruchage – CHANEL N°5

chanel le baudruchage
Luxury is in all of the details…

Baudruchage, the final touch to an exquisite creation. In this meticulous procedure, a delicate seal, the “baudruche,” is placed around the neck of the bottle’s stopper. It is held in place with two rows of cotton thread and secured with a wax stamp bearing the double C. Only a handful of artisans, working within the CHANEL studio, know how to perform this precise art.

Chanel Coco Noir Out Now

chanel coco noir
I was at Macy’s in Union Square, San Francisco yesterday and was happy to see that they were one of the forty doors chosen to launch Chanel Coco Noir. There was a really cool black display that explained the scent and displayed the bottles. I couldn’t get a really good picture because the lights were reflecting off the box but take my word for it, it was lovely. I also got to sample the scent before the launch – yay! I tried it on and it was pretty and definitely reminiscent of Coco – it seemed like a good mix of Coco and Coco Mademoiselle. I think I was hoping for something more Oriental. I was lucky enough to score a sample vial so I’ll be wearing Chanel Coco Noir for the next few days and I’ll decide whether to get a bottle based on how it wears. I have to say that I’m tempted to get it just for the bottle though – the black bottle is beautiful in person!

More News on Chanel Coco Noir

gabrielle chanel quotes

Yesterday I posted about a new fragrance Chanel is releasing called Coco Noir, a flanker to Coco. I just received official word from Chanel and I’m excited to share this news with you!

For Coco Noir, Jacques Polge wanted to distinguish it from the florals and instead was inspired by what he calls “CHANEL Coromandel culture, what you see and feel in her apartment. The night vision of the ‘Orient that starts and ends in Venice’ imposed itself upon me and that is where I wanted to go.”

gabrielle chanel quotes

Chanel has created in Coco Noir what it calls a “nocturnal Baroque” – a celebration of Gabrielle Chanel’s use of black and Venice’s influence on her designs and her life. Chanel spent much time in Venice, most notably on her best friend’s honeymoon, where she went along to try to ease the sadness of mourning Boy Capel’s death. You may also remember that the Chanel Cruise 2009/10 collection was presented on Lido Beach in Venice.

Chanel so eloquently describes Coco Noir: “Coco Noir is the magnificent evocation of that woman in that city and all those women today who choose intensity over the bland norm; the detours of seduction over perfunctory exhibitionism, and true luxury over vulgarity.”

The notes of the fragrance are woody and musky at its base and are contrasted with bright, light notes up top. These complex contrasts create Coco Noir, “a distinctively CHANEL olfactory signature of desire and modesty, mystery and brilliance, in which baroque audacity and classic demeanour mingle and blend.”

New Chanel Fragrance! Introducing Chanel Coco Noir

chanel coco noir

When black is the beginning of a mystery, radical and utterly fascinating.
-Chanel Inc.

I just read exciting news! Coco Chanel is releasing a flanker to the 1980s cult classic Coco Fragrance called Coco Noir. Composed by Chanel master perfumer Jacques Polge, Chanel Coco Noir “s inspired by the past, traveling, the Baroque, Venice at night and the time Coco spent in the mysterious city….the idea of Venetian velvet is a recurring motif.” (Perfume Shrine).

The fragrance notes for Chanel Coco Noir are as follows:

Top: grapefruit, bergamot and orange
Heart: jasmine, rose, red geranium, Indonesian patchouli
Base: Brazilian tonka bean, Bourbon vanilla, sandalwood, frankincense and white musk.
-Perfume Shrine

Coco Noir will release in August 2012 and then internationally in September 2012. I can’t wait to see the ad campaign! I’m wondering if they will go all out with a celebrity face and film or let the bottle speak for itself? I also am excited to smell the new fragrance. I love Coco and occasionally wear Coco Mademoiselle but love the idea of a noir fragrance – what could be more Coco?
