Chanel Metiers d'Art PARIS-EDIMBOURG SHOW INVITATION
We’re getting closer to the date of the Chanel Métiers d’Art Paris-Edimbourg Show and Chanel has just released an image of the invitation – not to be confused with AN invitation. The Chanel Métiers d’Art Paris-Edimbourg Show Invitation features an illustration by Karl Lagerfeld of Linlithgow Palace in his signature style. No real clues as to the collection so we’ll have to wait and see.

Chanel Métiers d’Art Paris-Edimbourg Update & Predictions

mary queen of scots coco chanel

The internet is abuzz with rumor of who is going to be at the upcoming Chanel Métiers d’Art Paris-Edimbourg on December 4th. We know Karl’s muses and Les Fidèles de Chanel will probably be in attendance but most people are wondering whether Chanel’s latest brand ambassador – Brad Pitt and partner Angelina Jolie – will be in attendance. I have no word but we can only guess at this point.

Chanel Tents Linlithgow Palace Edinburgh Scotland

Photos from the Telegraph and Herald Scotland

What we do know is that Chanel has posted up twelve tents outside Linlithgow Palace. I’m thinking this area is the backstage/production areas as Chanel has stated that the show will take place within the walls of the palace. Some have surmised the show would take place in the Palace’s courtyard – in much the same way that the Cruise 2013 show was show in the gardens at Versailles. Scotland can be chilly this time of year and Chanel has been rumored to have commissioned a glass roof for the Palace courtyard.

And since we’re on the topic of rumor and speculation, I thought I would throw out some ideas of what we may see on December 4th. Coco Chanel’s connection to Scotland is through the Duke of Westminster with whom she had an affair in the 1920′s. She often borrowed from menswear and always found inspiration in her lovers’ closets. From the Duke of Westminster she found tweed, cashmere and bold jewels (in the form of lavish gifts). She also spent much of her time in Scotland outdoors and especially loved horseback riding and fishing. Based on Coco Chanel’s experiences in Scotland and the recent purchase of Barrie Knitwear, I presume we will see a lot of knitwear, as well as tweed and sporting influences accompanied by eye-catching jewelry and accessories we have to come to expect from a Chanel show.

Since the presentation will take place within the walls of Linlithgow Palace I think there is a chance that Karl Lagerfeld will be inspired by Mary Queen of Scots since the palace was her birthplace. As we saw in the Chanel Resort 2013 collection at Versailles, Karl Lagerfeld was influenced by the fashions of Marie Antoinette. I could see Karl Lagerfeld taking inspiration from Mary Queen of Scots – especially the large white collars she wore – as Coco Chanel herself was inspired by them. We’ll know for sure next week.

Chanel Métiers d’Art Collection 2012/13 Paris-Edimbourg at Linlithgow Palace

Linlithgow Palace

Last week I mentioned that the upcoming Chanel Métiers d’Art Collection 2012/13 collection was going to be shown in Edinburgh. Today, Chanel announced that the Chanel Métiers d’Art Collection 2012/13 collection will be shown at Linlithgow Palace, near Edinburgh at 6pm on 4th December.

Linlithgow Palace, originally the majestic royal palace of the Stuarts, dating back to 1424, and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, now a ruined castle, will provide a spectacular backdrop for the collection which will be presented within the walls of the palace.

Karl Lagerfeld chose Edinburgh because he was inspired by the rich heritage of CHANEL in Scotland, and the skilled craftsmanship of Scottish tweed and cashmere, that are an integral and iconic part of CHANEL’s collections today. Together with the recent acquisition of Scottish knitwear brand Barrie made Scotland the perfect location for a collection that celebrates craftsmanship.

The Métiers d’Art Collection is my favorite collection of the year so I’m looking forward to this show. We’ll be seeing lots of tweeds and knitwear I’m sure and I can’t wait to see what surprises Lagerfeld has up his sleeves!

Chanel’s Upcoming Show Locations: Deauville Resort 2013-14 and Scotland Pre-Fall 2013

In 1913, Chanel opened her boutique in the French resort town of Deauville. To commemorate the 100th anniversary, Chanel will host the upcoming Chanel Resort 2014 collection in Deauville. Karl Lagerfeld told WWD: “My idea is to hire a train, have dinner on the train, do the show in a ballroom and go back at night,” he said. (WWD) What a wonderful way to commemorate the anniversary!

Chanel has also announced that the next Métiers d’Art show will take place in December at a secret location in Edinburgh, Scotland. (Vogue UK) A few months ago I wrote about how Rosehall, an estate that Coco Chanel shared with the Duke of Westminster that was being converted into a hotel. When I first heard that the Métiers d’Art show was taking place in Scotland my first thought was that it would take place at Rosehall. Alas, the show is taking place in Edinburgh and I can only imagine that it’s because Rosehall is in the countryside in Northern Scotland. I would be surprised though if having the show in Scotland was not influenced at all by the time she spent there with the Duke of Westminster.

Chanel Acquires Causse Gantier

Chanel is preserving the skills and craftsmanship of artisans – “ateliers d’art” – through Paraffection. Launched in 1997, Paraffection is a Chanel subsidiary created to preserve artisanal manufacturing and includes in its portfolio Desrues (costume jewellery), Lemarié (feather-maker), Maison Michel (hat-maker), Maison Lesage (embroidery), Massaro (boot-maker), Goossens (goldsmith), Guillet (fabric flowers-maker) and Atelier Montex (embroidery). The neweset addition to Paraffection is Causse Gantier – a Parisian glove-making company.

causse gantier

Maison Causse was founded in the town of Millau by Paul Causse in 1892. For more than a century, four generations of this family successively led the company until 2003. In a few years, Causse became a supplier to leading names in the French and international luxury sectors. Today, as the last active glove-maker in Millau, the “historic capital of luxury gloves in France”, the company’s 40 employees produce close to 25,000 pairs of gloves per year.

The partnership between Causse and CHANEL is all the more natural as the atelier has worked with Karl Lagerfeld and CHANEL’s design studio for many years on the Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear collections. Bruno Pavlovsky, President of CHANEL Fashion as well as of Causse, stated, “Maison Causse has rare traditional expertise that we wanted to preserve. Through this acquisition, we are sustaining excellence in glove-making in France.”

Causse will pursue its partnerships with all major luxury brands, with no exclusivity, and grow the presence of the Causse brand in France and throughout the world.

In welcoming Causse in Paraffection, CHANEL reaffirms its attachment to “Métiers d’art” and creation’s fundamental role, as well as the House’s wish to help expand and accompany their development.

First Look: Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 Ad Campaign

chanel prefall 2012 ad campaign

Back in December Karl Lagerfeld took us on the Bombay-Paris express to see the Chanel Métiers D’Art Pre-Fall 2012 Paris-Bombay collection. Earlier this week images surfaced online of the upcoming ad campaign featuring Daria Strokous, styled by Carine Roitfeld and photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.

The styling, hair and makeup seems similar to what we saw on the runway. The photos are set in front of a bar that looks luxurious but is not glitzy. The photos are shot in black and white and I like the way the grayscale makes the photos look a bit aged and the poses are reminiscent of dancing Shiva statues. Stay tuned as you’ll be seeing these ads in magazines in a few months.
